This month’s newsletter aims to explain exactly how hair transplant surgery works and the kind of results you should expect.

Hair transplants have come a very long ways since the days of hair plugs and doll hairs. You could say that hair restoration surgery has evolved into not only a science, but an art form as well. The best example of this is the most popular and effective form of hair transplant surgery: follicular unit transplantation. This is where the creativity lies, as hair transplant surgeons fill in thinning areas of the scalp with grafts of hair taken from the back or sides of the head. It’s the placement of these follicular unit grafts that puts the “art” in state-of-the-art surgery.

Hair grows in small groupings of 2-4 hairs, and these groupings are called follicular units. A follicular unit transplantation keeps these units intact and replaces them into balding areas. So, instead of the punched out look of hair plugs, these transplants mimic the look of completely natural hair coverage.

As mentioned, donor hair comes from the back and the sides of the head. This is important to know, because for some people (particularly some women), these hairs are not viable donors. For most of us, however, these hairs are perfect for hair transplants because they are genetically impervious to hair loss. The hair surgeon removes a strip of hair from the back of the head and dissects the follicular unit grafts from the strip. The hair doctor then uses a fine needle to puncture the balding site to receive the new follicular grafts. After surgery, the newly transplanted hairs will actually fall out. However, it’s not the hairs that are important, but the transplanted roots. Within three months of the surgery, new hairs will begin to grow, and you will be well on your way to reclaiming your full, youthful head of hair!
