Not making the cut
Are Women Candidates for Hair Transplant Surgery?

In this edition of SignatureForum’s Hair Restoration Newsletter, we’re going to take a more serious look at female pattern baldness. While, female hair loss is not nearly as common as it is with men, approximately 25 million women suffer from hair loss in the United States alone. Hair loss in women can be caused by a number of different factors, but fortunately for women who suffer from female pattern baldness (a hereditary condition) there are advanced surgical methods and viable solutions available such as hair transplant surgery.

A Look at Female Patten Baldness

Female hair loss is a devastating prospect, and the first step is usually the hardest: determining the cause of your hair loss. This is because so many factors can attribute to female hair loss and each has a different treatment route. It can take 2 or 3 medical opinions to figure out the exact cause of hair loss and to decide on the right hair restoration treatment. Female pattern baldness is one of the most prevalent causes. This type of hair loss is due to hereditary reasons. If your mother or grandmother suffered from hair loss and your pattern of hair loss is nearly identical, then genetics is probably at work. Advanced surgical methods like hair transplant surgery for a woman may be a viable solution for hereditary hair loss.

Although, candidates for female hair transplant surgery are fewer than male candidates. In transplant surgery, donor hairs are taken from healthy areas and transplanted to balding areas. With male pattern baldness, the hair loss is more uniform, which produces a larger number of viable donor hairs. With female pattern baldness the hair loss is often patchy or more of an overall thinning of the scalp, which could potentially produce less donor hair for a hair transplant surgeon to work with. If you feel you are suffering from female pattern baldness, a qualified hair loss surgeon can determine if you’re a candidate for surgery.

Other Factors for Female Hair Loss

Any reputable hair transplant clinic will make sure you’ve seen a dermatologist if you are unsure about what is causing your hair loss. Female pattern baldness is far from the only cause for hair loss in women. If you could attribute your female hair thinning to the following factors, there may be a different hair restoration option you could try, and hair transplant surgery can be ineffective on women whose hair loss is due to physical or emotional stress, pregnancy & childbirth, strong hair chemicals, medication, diet/malnutrition, or a thyroid disorder. Many times, when a woman experiences hair loss caused by one of these situations, the hair comes back once the problem is under control. Restoration could be as simple as switching medications, easing stress, or taking a multivitamin.
