Sticky Situation: Glued Wig Provider Refunds Unhappy Customer

by Alexandra Kilpatrick

A Melbourne hair-growth company will refund an unhappy client $3,500 after questions are raised about the company's links to a new hair treatment business.

Handyman David Aygur informed the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal that Hair Science International, which glues Chinese wigs onto men's bald spots, had guaranteed him a full head of hair. Instead, the client's hair began falling out in the shower, after which the clinic's staff claimed the serum they had administered was intended to kill his 'dead' hair and encourage the growth of new healthy hair. The disappointed handyman turned down an offer to be fitted for a wig after 11 months of laser treatment with the company yielded absolutely no visible hair growth.

Aygur said in spite of his successful refund, he remained angry that, although Hair Science International closed in May due to further false claims to customers, another hair growth business is now operating in its place, simply under a different name.

A Deceptive Practice?

In May, the Melbourne Magistrates Court fined Hair Science International $100,000 for misleading clients with claims that they could clone hair. Since then, a new company, the Hair Loss Institute, has continued to operate using Hair Science International's office space and telephone number. Images and testimonies from the former company's star client, Australian Football League player Brent Guerra, have appeared on the Hair Loss Institute's website.

The Hair Loss Institute's staff claimed that its predecessor has been banned from promising guaranteed results and revolutionary technologies, although the newer company is a separate entity and therefore not bound by the orders of the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The Hair Loss Institute made claims on its website that they could replace up to 100,000 strands of hair until the company hastily pulled down the site Monday afternoon. In a previous investigation of Hair Science International, Consumer Affairs Victoria had found a similar procedure that simply involved a cheap Chinese wig on rubber backing.

Spiros Kalotihos, the Hair Loss Institute's accounts manager, asserts that there is no financial connection between the company and Hair Science International, although the two businesses' directors are married and both companies are registered to the same address.

Kalotihos admitted that the Hair Loss Institute had been offering treatments to former Hair Science International clients but that the two companies had different business models with the Hair Loss Institute only offering only wigs and hair transplants to its customers.
