When Hair Band Members Lose Their Locks

Purists may argue that Guns N Roses wasn’t a hair metal band, because that’s a pejorative term. However, there’s no question these 80s rockers all had long, copious locks. So what happens to a hair band member when middle age and baldness hits? Guns N Roses’ original drummer and co-songwriter, Steven Adler, is upfront about his hair loss treatment. He went with the Bosley hair transplant, and is happy with the results.
Bald Isn’t Beautiful When You’re Bumpy
Back in the day, Adler’s hair was thick and often blond or reddish. Now 52, he wasn’t pleased about going bald, partly because he felt he had a “bumpy” head. He also notes his well-publicized battles with heroin and cocaine didn’t do his body any favors, and may have exacerbated his hair loss. A life on the road doesn’t lend itself to good nutrition, Adler admits he’s paying for the excesses of his youth now that he’s hit middle age, but also points out that many male celebs have undergone hair transplants to retain a youthful appearance.
The Bosley Follicular Unit Transplantation
The Bosley follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is an outpatient procedure that restores hair permanently. Here’s how it works:
- The doctor identifies the patient’s thinning areas
- A custom-tailored plan is designed to achieve a natural look
- Generally, the back of the head contains the “donor” hair
- The doctor removes a piece of tissue from the donor area containing hair follicles
- The area where the hair was removed is sutured
Clinicians prepare the donor hair for transplantation. This takes a few hours, so patients may read, watch TV or work via laptop.
Hair Transplanting
Once the donor hair is ready for transplant, the doctor makes a small incision on the patient’s head for each follicular unit – let’s not abbreviate them FU. The follicular units are transplanted based on the patient’s individual hair plan.
Post Procedure
Over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are generally sufficient to relieve any post-transplantation discomfort. Most patients can return to work within a few days, but it is important to visit the doctor the day after the procedure for a visual inspection.
Once transplanted, FUTs start growing like normal hair. You should notice definite regrowth within three months, and within six months you’ll probably need a haircut! Of course, there’s no need to cut your hair if you’re planning to rejoin your ‘80s hair band.
