Wen Hair Care May Cause Hair Loss

by Jane Meggitt

The Food and Drug Administration is conducting an investigation on Wen Hair Care after receiving 127 complaints about the products from users who experienced hair loss. That alone makes it the largest number of complaints ever received regarding a hair cleansing product, according to the FDA. Hollywood hairstylist Chaz Dean sells the Wen Hair Care line, and the FDA states that his company, Chaz Dean Inc. and distributor Gunthy Renker LLC have received an astonishing 21,000 reports of adverse effects. The FDA learned of the scope of the complaints while inspecting the manufacturing and distribution facilities.

Celebrity Infomercials

Wen Hair Care featured television infomercials with celebrities such as Brooke Shields and Alyssa Milano touting the products’ benefits. The product is billed as an all-in-one hair care regimen, containing no sulfates and doing the job of a shampoo, conditioner and detangler.

Various Types of Hair Loss

Consumer complaints range from mild to severe amounts of hair loss. Some users allege they have become completely bald after using the products. Most claims involve wads of hair falling out or bald spots on the scalp. Other complaints, according to the FDA, include:

  • hair breakage
  • itching
  • rashes

For some individuals, the hair loss may prove permanent. Anyone experiencing a reaction should immediately stop using the product.

Products in Question

While Wen Hair Care markets several product lines, two thirds of the complaints involving hair loss concern the Sweet Almond Mint variety. Substantial complaints have also been made regarding the Lavender and Pomegranate products. As of July, 2016, the FDA does not know exactly what is causing hair loss and other reactions in Wen Hair Care products.

Class Action Lawsuit

More than 200 women have filed a class action lawsuit against Wen Hair Care and Gunthy Renker LLC in a federal California court. The suit alleges that Wen products caused “extreme hair loss.”

Wen Hair Care Response

In 2015, the company issued a statement referring to its products as safe, and noting millions of bottles were sold over the past 16 years. “Through this experience, we have learned that there is an immediate need for more education about hair health and common hair concerns in the industry, unrelated to Wen. There is no evidence that WEN products cause hair loss and the ingredients and formulations meet or exceed safety and quality standards set by the cosmetics industry. We stand behind them,” according to the company.
