Ways to Conquer Stress and Save Your Luscious Locks

by Alexandra Kilpatrick

From work and academic pressures to sleep deprivation and relationship troubles, stress is simply an expected aspect of our modern lives. However, research and studies show that stress can have a severe impact on one’s health.

One effect of stress that tends not to be discussed is its impact on our hair. High stress levels wreak havoc on the body, namely the hair, skin and nails. Studies show a direct correlation between stress and three different types of hair loss: telogen effluvium, trichotillomania and alopecia areata.

However, stress related hair loss can be prevented and treated by reducing your levels of stress and ultimately allowing for hair regrowth.

Regular exercise

Exercising for at least 20 minutes per day reduces stress by increasing the production of endorphins in the body. Regular exercise can also increase self-confidence and lower the symptoms associated with depression and anxiety.

Washing and brushing

Make sure to continue washing and brushing your hair, even while stress related hair loss is occurring. Avoiding washing your hair allows oil to build up and leads to thinning hair and hair loss. Your hair looks and feels best after it is freshly washed. Regular brushing is also great for thinning hair, as it stimulates blood flow in the scalp and promotes hair growth.

Assert yourself

Dealing with problems head on as well as anticipating and preventing problems will significantly reduce stress levels. Therefore, it’s very important to speak up when something is bothering you.

Avoid people who cause stress

Try to limit the amount of time you spend with anyone who causes more stress in your life.</p

Learn relaxation techniques

Learn how to relax in the midst of stress triggers, using techniques like meditation, deep breathing or guided imagery.

Make time for yourself

Be social with friends and family rather than withdrawing due to stress. Poor mental and emotional health only increases stress levels and accelerates hair loss.

Consider yoga

Yoga requires breath control and simple meditation, both of which relieve stress and encourage relaxation.
