Ways to Avoid Hair Loss
by Jane Meggitt
Few personal grooming issues can cause the panic of hair loss. No one feels good about thinning hair or bald patches. While hair loss may eventually prove inevitable if you’re subject to male or female pattern baldness, there are ways to stave off hair loss and keep your hair for the long run.
The Right Diet
The right diet can help maintain the hair on your head, while the wrong diet exacerbates hair loss. Hair requires protein to thrive, and the best way to ensure sufficient protein is including meat in the diet. Hair loss is common among vegans and vegetarians, and the only way for them to keep hair healthy is by consuming lots of bean and legume proteins, as well as taking B vitamin supplements. A lack of B12 results in hair loss, and other than supplementation, is only available in animal products. Keep in mind that the body cannot absorb plant proteins the same way it does the animal-based types.
Another tip: Always eat breakfast. If your hair doesn’t receive nutrients for a long period – say from last night’s dinner to today’s lunch – it has a negative effect and can lead to lost and thinning locks.
Wash and Massage
While it’s important to wash hair regularly, learn to do it the right way to discourage hair loss. That means using a large amount of gentle shampoo and performing a massage on your scalp. You can also opt for a special scalp massage treatment. Use a soft brush on your tresses, so you don’t tear hair out with harsh movements.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Menopausal women often suffer significant hair loss, to the point where large bald areas appear on the head. If you have no contraindications – such as a history of breast cancer – ask your gynecologist about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT has many benefits besides hair restoration. It can revive your libido, strengthen your bones and relieve hot flashes and night sweats.
Use Heat and Chemicals Only When Needed
Do you blow dry your hair after every washing? For most people, the answer is yes. Heat harms your hair, so put the blow dryer on a low setting and avoid heated styling devices. The same holds true of chemical treatments, which includes hair dye. Use natural hair dyes instead, which may not last as long as chemical dyes but don’t harm your hair.
