Ways Men Can Reduce Hair Loss
by Jane Meggitt
By the age of 35, approximately 2/3 of men have experienced obvious hair loss. Fast forward another twenty years, and 85 percent of men are balding or completely bald. If male pattern baldness runs in your family, you may have already resigned yourself to the inevitable. There are ways you can reduce potential hair loss, and while these methods may not totally prevent baldness, they can keep more hair on your head for a longer period.
De-Stress
Stress is hard on your hair. In stressful situations, the body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. If your stress is chronic and your cortisol levels remain elevated, that can wreak havoc on your adrenal glands, leading to adrenal fatigue. That leads to even more hair loss. For the sake of your sanity and your hair, find ways to relax when you’re stressed out. Mediation, yoga or even taking long walks are good stress reducers.
Up Your Vitamin Intake
Recent studies show that people suffering from the autoimmune disease alopecia areata, which cause hair to fall out in patches, are far more likely than non-sufferers to have vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps hair set its growth phase. For most men, 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3 daily should provide sufficient amounts, although it is best to check with your doctor. Add B-complex vitamins to your intake list, as the B vitamins help your body deal with stress, and B7 actually makes hair thicker.
Eat Right
Your hair needs certain nutrients for proper nourishment and health. That includes food containing plenty of iron and protein, like beef or lamb. Leaner type of protein-rich foods with anti-inflammatory properties, such as wild salmon, are also vital to hair health. Eat your leafy greens and foods rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries or cranberries.
There are also foods you should avoid to keep hair on your head. That includes sugary items, processed or “junk” foods, and foods containing trans-fatty acids, such as corn or vegetable oils. Keep your caffeine and alcohol intake to a minimum for hair health.
Use a Ketoconazole Shampoo
Ketoconazole shampoos are marketed to combat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, but they are also useful in slowing down hair loss. Ketoconazole – available over-the-counter or by prescription for a stronger formulation- stops the conversion of testosterone to DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. DHT can shrink hair follicles, loosening hair and making it fall out.
