Turmeric for Healthy Hair

by Jane Meggitt

You’ve probably heard about the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and how it may help your joints. It turns out this ancient spice may also protect and improve the hair on your head. Using turmeric as a supplement and as a topical paste may help prevent hair loss. Unlike hair loss medications, turmeric has no side effects.

What is Turmeric?

Deep yellow turmeric is the primary spice in curry. One of its main compounds – and powerful healer – is curcumin. A member of the ginger family, turmeric is native to Southeast Asia and India. It has been used for medicinal purposes since time immemorial. It is one of the basics of Indian Ayurvedic medicine, where it is known as haldi.

Stress Reduction

Stress is a major component of hair loss. Regular supplementation or consumption of turmeric can reduce stress levels, making you feel better and lessening the odds of hair loss from that cause. Turmeric helps boost the immune system, so it may help prevent or reduce hair loss resulting from autoimmune diseases.

Scalp Conditions

If you suffer from dandruff, seborrhea or eczema on the scalp, try some turmeric. The latter two conditions can promote hair loss. You can take turmeric internally to aid your scalp, but also apply it topically. Along with its anti-inflammatory effects, turmeric also has strong anti-fungal properties. Mix turmeric with virgin olive oil prior to showering. Leave the mixture on your scalp for 15 minutes and then shampoo it off.

Turmeric vs. Finasteride

Hair loss drug finasteride is used for treatment of androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness. Finasteride is a “5 alpha reductase inhibitor.” That means it changes the body’s ability to convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, a hormone linked with male pattern baldness. Turmeric acts in a similar way, and may be a natural finasteride substitute for men with this type of hair loss. While not as strong as finasteride for this purpose, it also doesn’t have the drug’s potential side effects – which include erectile dysfunction. Finasteride has also been linked to male infertility. For guys who want to keep their hair and have a sex life, it’s a no-brainer.

Hair Loss Treatment

Curcumin helps inhibit Transforming Growth Factor (TGF) beta one, an inflammatory agent that kills off hair follicles. Mix a paste of raw honey, milk and turmeric and leave it on your scalp for 15 minutes before shampooing.

When purchasing turmeric either as a spice or supplement, buy only the highest quality products.
