The Truth about Hair Oil and Why It’s Not an Ideal Dandruff Cure
by Alexandra Kilpatrick

Hair oil may offer relief from an itchy flaky scalp, but the oil is not the best cure for dandruff, according to Dr. Vijay Singhal, dermatologist at Delhi based Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute.
“Hair oil has been used in [India] as a continuance of our age-old traditional way of moisturizing our hair,” Dr. Vijay explained to The Times of India. “However, the truth is that the hair oil forms a layer on the scalp that prevents moisture from entering the skin naturally. This leads to the formation of flakes and dandruff because of the choked pores. So, I do not recommend applying hair oil.”
Since hair oil prevents moisture from reaching the scalp, applying hair oil to a scalp already infected with dandruff tends to intensify the hair loss process. Hair often loses its shine and becomes dull when hair oil remains on the hair for a long time. Therefore, it is important to avoid applying hair oil to the scalp, especially if you are struggling with dandruff.
Try a few home remedies instead to reduce itchiness, flakiness and the incidence of dandruff.
Lemon juice dandruff cure
Simply massage lemon juice into your scalp before taking a shower. Wash your hair thoroughly after 15 to 20 minutes. The lemon treatment helps to remove stickiness, prevents dandruff and makes your hair look shiny and radiant.
Aloe vera dandruff cure
Rub aloe vera gel onto your scalp about 20 minutes before you take a shower. Leave the rub on for a full 20 minutes, then wash your hair with a shampoo.
Curd or yogurt dandruff cure
Apply some curd or yogurt to your hair and scalp, keeping it on for at least an hour before washing it thoroughly with a mild shampoo. Repeat this process at least twice a week for effective results.
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are a myriad of solutions for the troubling problem of dandruff. For example, if your regular shampoo no longer does the trick, dandruff shampoos can often help, as long as you find one that works for you.
Dandruff shampoos are classified by the medication they contain. Zinc pyrithione shampoos help reduce the fungus on your scalp that can cause both dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, while tar based shampoos helps such conditions by slowing how quickly skin cells on the scalp die and flake off.
In addition to using the appropriate shampoo for your hair, you can take a few steps to reduce the risk of developing dandruff. You should learn to manage your stress, since stress affects your overall health and can help trigger dandruff or worsen existing symptoms. You can also reduce your risk by cutting back on styling products, eating a healthy diet and getting a little sun.
