The Top 4 Dos and Don'ts to Revive Thinning Hair

by April Maguire

Have you noticed that your hair doesn’t look as full as it once did? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, roughly two-thirds of all women experience some degree of hair loss. And while thinning hair may be frustrating, you’re certainly not powerless to stop it. Check out the tips below for ways to restore your hair to its former glory.

Always Use Conditioner

Women with thinning hair sometimes avoid using conditioner. There’s a prevailing theory that thinning or weakened hair can’t withstand the chemical taxation of rinse-out conditioners or that heavy leave-in treatments will weigh the hair down or cause it to break. However, by avoiding conditioner, you may actually be doing far more harm than good. Conditioners add moisture, which helps the overall health of your hair. And as long as you choose a lightweight conditioning treatment, you shouldn’t be adding any undue weight or pressure that will cause damage.

Avoid Using Heat

Thinning hair is structurally weaker, and high-heat styling techniques can cause it to break. So if your hair is thinning, the best course of action is to leave your flat iron, blow-dryer or curling iron in the cabinet and go with a more natural style. If that doesn’t work for you, however, try adding a protective spray to your beauty routine. There are a number of shielding mists that will strengthen your hair, allowing it to be mildly heated without suffering dehydration and breakage.

Cut the Tension

People don’t like feeling tense, and neither does your hair. Blow-drying it straight each day, putting it in a ponytail, or wearing extensions all add tension that can potentially cause thinning. And if your hair is already thin, this kind of added strain can result in permanent damage and even hair loss. For best results, choose looser styles or go for a brushless blow-dry to help cut down on tension.

Watch What You Eat

Believe it or not, eating healthy foods can actually go a long way to making your hair healthier. Be warned, you may need to spend months on a nutrient-rich diet to change the chemistry of your body enough to affect your hair. However, giving your hair a steady stream of protein, zinc, iron, B vitamins and fatty acids will help to strengthen and fortify it.

Dealing with thinning hair can be stressful. But if you follow these simple tips, you might be able to give your hair the help that it needs to grow healthier and fuller.
