To Dry Shampoo or Not to Dry Shampoo, That is the Question

by Angela Santoriello

With time of the essence, the luxury of washing one’s hair daily is simply not always an option anymore. And why? Because washing is not as simple as it sounds. It means applying products, blow drying, styling and constant touch-ups to keep your locks looking their best. Many women know their best hair days come a day after the washing process, anyway.

With that said, if you can avoid the hour-plus process of perfection by using dry shampoo to combat oil, why not take advantage? The Cleveland Clinic reports how the “alcohol- or starch-based sprays” absorb oil and add volume simultaneously. “They also seem to fall in line with the trend toward less frequent wet shampooing,” adds the health center.

But remember: when it seems too good to be true, it often is, according to Dr. Wilma Bergfeld. Though the doctor notes that dry shampooing may have it’s place, by no means should it replace actually washing your hair. “Your hair and scalp needs to be washed and rinsed intermittently to keep it clean. The scalp collects chemicals and pollutants both from the air and from cosmetic care products, and if you only use a dry shampoo, the cleansing is only minimal but it does freshen the hair by removing oils,” said Bergfeld.

The Huffington Post points out a few facts about dry shampoo, saying the arid, waterless cleanser has been around for some time, first appearing in the 1960s and slowly gaining popularity in recent years. Offering the do’s and don’ts of dry shampoo, the paper sought advice from Hollywood hairstylists Larry Sims and Jacqueline Bush.

According to the duo, always spray dry shampoo at least six inches away from of the scalp and only on dry hair. And when spraying, be sure to get the roots and ends for “modern matte texture.” Agreeing with Bergfeld, Sims says “if you need to reach for dry shampoo after a third use, it's time to take a shower. The natural oils from your scalp weigh down your hair, giving a greasy look." He adds that dry shampoo is perfect for all hair types because “it dries out the oils on your hair, not the oils in your scalp."

Allure magazine claims there “are a zillion dry shampoos on the market at this very moment” and shared some of the best buys under $20, including Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Dry Shampoo, Aveeno Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo, Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo, Redken Powder Fresh 01 Aerosol Hair Powder Dry Shampoo and L’Oreal Paris Everstyle Energizing Dry Shampoo. So if you have no time to wash, dry shampoo just might be a quick way to a great hair day.
