Everybody wants a thick, healthy head of hair. Genetic factors may limit an individual’s ability to achieve that goal, but everyone can make the best of the hair they have. It’s not a question of just using the right shampoo and conditioner, although that can help. A holistic approach is necessary.

The Right Diet

Your hair reflects your overall health, and your overall health depends a great deal on your diet. Avoid junk and processed foods, as well as sugar. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Hair is made of protein, so consume plenty of proteins to encourage strong hair growth. Keep caffeine and alcohol consumption to a minimum.

The Right Comb

Combs aren’t expensive, so invest in a good one rather than a cheap piece of plastic. You want a comb with wide teeth which can help prevent hair loss. A wide comb is better for dealing with damp or wet hair, causing less breakage in the combing process.

Avoid Chemicals

Whether you’re dying, perming or otherwise treating your hair chemically, you aren’t doing your head any favors in the long run. Harsh chemicals can damage hair and cause hair loss.

No Smoking

Smoking is bad for you on so many levels, and it also affects your hair. Smoking leads not only to hair loss, but also to premature graying, according to the New York Times. Cigarette smoking can prevent your hair from receiving enough nutrients and oxygen for healthy growth. If you’re prone to genetic baldness, smoking accelerates the process.

No Tight Styles

The constant tension on hair from tight styles such as buns, ponytails, weaves and cornrows can lead to alopecia, or balding. Loss of hair on the temples and sides and widening of the part are early signs of damage from tight styling.

Keep Heat Off Hair

Heat hurts hair, causing breakage and dullness. When blow drying, keep the heat level as low as possible, and opt for towel drying if you can. Use heat styling items sparingly if you use them at all.

Reduce Stress

Too much stress can literally make your hair fall out. It doesn’t happen right at the time of greatest stress, but the results occur a few months afterward. Keep your stress levels as low as possible with lifestyle changes, as well as practices such as yoga and meditation. Even a daily walk in nature is a great stress reducer.
