Tech is now part of virtually every aspect of our lives, and if you’re dealing with hair loss, that area is no exception. 3D hair follicle technology and other development are revolutionizing the hair loss industry, allowing those with thinning or balding pates to obtain a natural looking head of hair.
Hair Transplant Innovation
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) for hair transplantation has been available for a while, but new technology has greatly improved the process. Not long ago, FUE required taking whole skin strips from the back of the head – where hair still existed for balding men – and dividing them into various sections for transplantation in bald areas. Not only was the process time-consuming, but it hurt and could lead to scarring. Today, the same result is attainable with the harvesting of only a few hairs. There’s little, if any, pain involved and any scarring is minimal. However, more effective hair transplant procedures are in the pipeline.
3D Hair Transplants
This relatively new technology isn’t available yet, but that should change in the near future. Just as 3D printing can create other materials, which run the gamut, it can also create new hair. Theoretically, 3D printing needs digital mapping of an individual’s scalp for determination of placement of necessary components. Precision printing could print follicles, which are then implanted with bio-ink. Researchers are experiencing good results with such bio-printing, but it is not yet ready for consumer introduction.
Stem Cells and Hair Growth
Stem cells may cure all sorts of diseases and conditions down the road, and hair loss is one of them. UCLA scientists have already devised a method of activating a person’s own stem cells to cause hair growth. However, this research is still in the laboratory phase, and clinical trials for humans are still needed.
Prosthetic Hair
When used to correct balding, wigs are known as “prosthetic hair.” Wig technology has grown substantially in recent years, and are designed to fit better and more comfortably than those available at the turn of the millennium. Not only do quality wigs resemble real hair – and many consist of either genuine hair or a blend of real and synthetic strands – but the materials used are hypo-allergenic. While wigs aren’t for everyone, they look and feel much more natural than in the past, and a variety of styles and colors allow wearers to make a real style statement.
