In the News: Stem Cells used in Hair Loss Treatment
by Alexandra Kilpatrick

Millions of American women experience hair loss, receding hairlines and bald patches on a daily basis. The emotional and physical affects can be devastating.
“I used to have so much hair; big, thick, curly long hair,” entertainer Laurie Shaw commented to WWSB’s MySuncoast.com.
Shaw now has a beautiful head of hair, but that wasn’t always the case.
“It was thinning; nobody could tell me why,” Shaw explained. “People noticed before I really wanted to admit what it was.”
The former hair loss sufferer now travels from England to the Greco Medical Group in Sarasota for hair restoration treatment.
“We’ve done over four thousand treatments from people in thirty countries and not had one adverse side effect, because it uses your own cells,” Dr. Joseph Greco told MySuncoast.com. The doctor developed and now uses a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and cytokine-rich plasma (CRP) to treat hair loss.
“The growth factors on the platelets are fertilizer for your hair. It increases circulation, it reduces inflammation and it turns the hair into the growing phase.”
Vogue featured the stem cell hair restoration treatment in this month’s issue, giving Shaw and others hope for hair loss sufferers.
“And now it’s becoming one of the big treatments for alopecia areata, which is devastating,” Greco added to MySuncoast.com.
Greco claims that his patients generally see less hair shedding within a couple of weeks. Since hair has a rest phase, it usually takes two to three months to see a marked improvement and four to six months for peak effect.
