Six Reasons You Might Be Losing Your Hair
by April Maguire
Sooner or later, hair loss impacts almost everyone on the planet. For men, thinning can begin as early as the 20s or 30s, with more than 80% of men experiencing a noticeable amount of loss by the age of 80. Unfortunately, women don't fare much better, with the most recent statistics finding that by the age of 70 more than 70% of women suffer from some degree or thinning or loss.
With so many people losing their lovely locks, it shouldn't come as a surprise that there are numerous causes for hair loss. Here are six of the most common, along with ways you can limit their impact.
Bad Diet
Some people don't get the proper nutrients from their diet because they eat unhealthy foods. On the other hand, some people simply don't eat enough food, typically because they're crash dieting. Whatever the reason, improper nutrition is one of the major causes of hair loss. So make sure you eat plenty of hair-strengthening foods every day, like fruits, vegetables, nuts and lean protein.
Too Little Sleep
Sleep is your body's way of repairing itself. If you don't get enough, then you'll liable to pay the price, and for many people that means hair loss. In general, you want to get at least eight hours of sleep a day. And no, sleeping less and taking naps during the day to supplement is not the same as getting a full night's rest.
Stress
A little bit of daily stress isn't going to make you go bald. However, incredibly stressful events, such as an accident or the loss of a loved one can alter your normal hair cycle, resulting in excess shedding. Fortunately, over time the cycle should correct itself and your hair should begin growing normally again.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, when hormones are surging, most women notice that their hair is fuller and thicker. After giving birth, however, a lot of women experience a noticeable amount of thinning. In most cases though, the shedding stops as your hormones settle back into their normal levels.
Overstyling
Excessive heat or wearing your hair in too-tight styles can put a dangerous amount of stress on the follicles and lead to hair loss. So at least some of the time you should avoid the ponytails, braids and extensions, and even steer clear of the straightener and blow-dryer if you can. That way you can give your follicles a much-needed rest.
Genetics
Far and away, the number one cause of hair loss is genetics in the form of male- and female-pattern baldness. If that's the source of your hair loss, then there are over-the-counter treatments, such as Rogaine, that can curtail hair loss and even help it to grow back.
Nobody wants to lose your hair. But as long as you know the most common causes, you can take preventative measures to ensure that your hair stays on your head where it belongs.
