Scalp Micro-Pigmentation: The Latest Weapon Against Hair Loss
by Alex Kilpatrick

Scalp micro-pigmentation offers sufferers the option of a faster and less invasive process of concealing balding or thinning areas.
The new non-surgical cosmetic procedure uses dermal pigments, carefully matched to the patient’s hair color.
According to the hair loss treatment clinic HIS Hair, who created the procedure, scalp micro-pigmentation stimulates the natural look of cropped hair by replicating real shaven hair follicles on the scalp and camouflages and strengthens thinning hair, pattern baldness, alopecia and hair transplant scars.
Scalp micro-pigmentation’s best candidates include sufferers of male or female pattern baldness, scalp scars or post hair transplant patients.
“Contrary to societal belief, most men who suffer from male pattern baldness are extremely unhappy with their situation and would do anything to change it,” Matthew Iulo, vice president of sales and marketing at HIS Hair Clinic, said, according to CosmeticsDesign.com. “Men with extensive scarring on their scalp or the hair bearing areas of their face such as the beard and moustache, can really benefit from this procedure.”
Androgenetic alopecia or common male pattern baldness accounts for more than 95 percent of hair loss in men, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Two-thirds of American men experience some degree of hair loss by the age of 35, while about 85 percent of men have significantly thinning hair by age 50.
During a scalp micro-pigmentation procedure, specialist pigments are deposited into the skin’s dermal layer on the scalp using a combination of angles, penetration depths, deposit sizes and pigment shades, creating a realistic illusion of real shaven hair on the scalp, according to Iulo.
“This is a truly viable alternative to traditional hair transplant surgery, hair systems, pills, potions and cover-ups,” Iulo said, according to CosmeticsDesign.com. “It’s the ultimate modern solution for hair loss.”
Performed in three sessions, the treatment is introduced superficially to the patient’s scalp, penetrating up to one millimeter into the skin.
The successful procedure is not permanent, so touch-ups are necessary but vary among patients.
