Rise in Balding Women Resorting to Hair Transplant Surgery

by Alexandra Kilpatrick

Hair loss affects two thirds of women in the United Kingdom at some point in their lives, due to stress, health issues or genetics, according to statistics.

Now, more and more solutions are available to these women and many are opting to invest in cosmetic procedures to rectify the problem.

A London clinic claims that compared to 2011, it has witnessed an 82 percent increase in the number of women undergoing hair transplants this year. The clinic also notes that the average age of women seeking hair transplants is 39.

Hair transplant surgeon Dr. Raghu Reddy attributes this rise in women seeking treatment to an improved awareness of hair loss and its remedies.

“I think women are more knowledgeable today than they were a few years ago about the viable solutions to hair loss,” Reddy told Daily Mail. “While high-profile male celebrities who have undergone hair transplants have undoubtedly helped make more men in the UK open to the possibility of a hair transplant, this has actually also encouraged more women to consider the option of investing in a transplant. Now, women are more informed and better placed to address the problem.”

Contrary to what most believe, women and men alike can use the same hair transplant procedure, known as a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) transplant, which involves removing hairs from one area and transplanting them to balding areas on the head. The procedure is delivered under local anesthetic.

Dr. Reddy, who works at The Private Clinic in London, claims that more and more women are seeking hair loss advice for a myriad of reasons.

“Many of the women I see have worn extensions for many years, which have put a lot of traction on the existing hair, while in some cases glue applied to the roots to join extensions has also starved the hair of its own vital nutrients,” Reddy told Daily Mail.

“Over time, this causes the hair to thin and if this is not addressed it can turn into a more concerning condition known as traction alopecia, something which means the hair will not grow back. The same can occur with over-styling – the prolonged use of hair straighteners or heated curlers can weaken the hair and gradually cause bald patches to form.”

“Traction alopecia caused by extensions can cause temporary patchy hair loss,” Keith Hobbs, Clinical Director of the Institute of Trichologists, commented to Daily Mail. “Long term use of extensions can in some cases cause permanent hair loss so using a product like Nioxin DiaBoost helps strengthen hair.”

“Stress is also something which can commonly trigger hair loss in women,” Reddy informed Daily Mail. “Prolonged periods of severe stress can lead to a change in hormonal balances and over time this can pave the way for hair thinning or patterned baldness. This is something that is particularly common amongst women in highly stressful professions and unfortunately is something which can be very serious if the patient does not opt to change their lifestyle and reduce their stress levels.

“But unlike male hair loss, cases of hair loss in women are most commonly caused by some form of underlying medical condition such as a hormonal disorder, polycystic ovaries or anemia. First and foremost, it is important to ascertain what is causing the hair to fall out, and only then can a suitable solution be sought.”
