Restore Hair with Amniotic Fluid

by Jane Meggitt

You don’t want to wear wigs to hide your thinning hair, or resort to common topical or oral medications that help restore hair. Those medications may work, but require you to use them for life if you don’t want to start balding again. If you’re suffering from hair loss, a new treatment featuring amniotic fluid can stop your locks from shedding and restore growth. This procedure works best for those in the early stages of alopecia, the technical term for hair loss. Currently, only a few physicians are offering stem cell/amniotic fluid therapy, but the numbers are sure to grow.

Amniotic Fluid and Stem Cells

A fetus in the womb is surrounded and protected by amniotic fluid. When a pregnant woman’s water breaks, it’s actually the amniotic fluid signaling the baby is about to arrive. Amniotic fluid contains stem cells, which scientists have found can change into various tissues. A small amount of fluid extracted during amniocentesis, a routine prenatal test, provides the stem cells with no harm to the fetus. Amniotic fluid/stem cell therapy offers hope for all sorts of conditions.

The Process

To start a patient’s treatment, a nurse draws blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge for platelet separation. Platelets can help hair grow. The platelet-rich plasma is then mixed into a serum containing amniotic tissue, and the doctor injects the solution into the top layer of the scalp. The physician then performs microneedling on the scalp to help the platelet-rich plasma spread. Because the doctor has administered a local anesthetic to the scalp, there’s little or no pain involved. A patient’s own blood is used, so there’s no risk of an allergic reaction.

The entire process, from beginning to end, takes just about an hour. Patients return for a second session one month later, and come back for annual maintenance treatments. The doctor will likely want to monitor a patient for hair growth progress, so initially you might come in every three or four months for that purpose.

Quick Results

After treatment, hair loss slows within just a few days. Once hair loss stops, it can start growing again. It may take up to a year for your full head of hair to return. While the treatment isn’t cheap – approximately $7,000 – it’s far less expensive in both money and time than hair transplantation. It is your natural hair, returning after an alopecia hiatus.
