Receding Hairline Treatments
by Marisa Amorasak

When it comes to treating your hair loss symptoms, it’s important to remember that not all hair loss is the same. Although most hair loss in men can be attributed to androgenetic alopecia, it can occur in various places on the scalp. When a man starts losing hair from near his temples and the front of his scalp, it’s called a receding hairline. A receding hairline may include a widow’s peak or the frontal area may have recessed as well. Read on to discover the most effective receding hairline treatments.
Hair Transplants
A hair transplant, or hair restoration, is the only way to immediately replace baldness with your own natural, growing hair. A hair transplant begins when a surgeon removes hair from the lower region of your scalp, where hair loss doesn’t occur. This process can be done by taking micro grafts or by performing follicular unit extraction (FUE). After the grafts are removed, they are transplanted to the treatment area. Hair transplants can be performed anywhere hair loss exists on the scalp, including the front of the scalp for receding hairlines. One of the greatest benefits of hair transplants is that the results are completely customizable; the way your hair looks will mimic your hair restoration desires and your scalp’s natural growth patterns. Hair transplants are ideal for patients who want to permanently end their hair loss woes and have been unresponsive to other forms of treatment.
Rogaine
Minoxidil, often marketed under the brand name Rogaine, is a topical treatment that has been proven to help decrease hair loss in men suffering from androgenetic alopecia. Minoxidil was the first FDA-approved hair loss medication on the market, and it remains the most popular. Rogaine and similar products yield noticeable results for some people, but those results are generally reversed after the treatment has been discontinued. In terms of using Rogaine and other minoxidil products for a receding hairline, a 2003 study found that this medication was relatively ineffective on hair loss near the temples—that is, the “peaks” in a widow’s peak. It did, however, show improvement on the frontal section of the scalp, with 50% of users noticing results after 48 weeks. If you suffer from hair loss in this centermost region toward the front of your scalp and you’re taking your first foray into hair loss treatment, Rogaine may be a worthwhile option.
Laser Hair Restoration
The latest way to treat hair loss is through laser hair restoration, which uses the power of laser light to increase hair growth. Laser hair restoration is recommended to patients who suffer from minor or early hair loss, like those with receding hairlines. Laser hair restoration uses low-level lasers during the treatment to promote blood circulation, which is the starting point behind the hair growth cycle. One of the benefits of laser hair restoration is that it is a completely non-invasive treatment that takes place over a series of sessions. Plus, the results of laser hair restoration are generally permanent. It’s commonly used as an accompanying treatment to hair transplants.
