Products Help Women with Hair Loss
by Alexandra Kilpatrick

According to ABC Local in Houston, about 60 percent of women deal with hair loss, either hereditary or caused by such lifestyle factors as pregnancy, stress, medication or surgery.
It’s important to know the cause of your hair loss before attempting to treat it. While most cases are hereditary, anything that interferes with the normal hair cycle, from medications to illnesses to infections to chemicals, can also cause hair loss.
“Like a garden, a normal hair cycle should lead to a product, which is the hair,” Wendy Roberts, M.D., a dermatologist at a private practice in Rancho Mirage, California, told WebMD. “Growth cycles are important because when they go awry, that is one of the reasons we have hair loss. It’s a very dynamic place and anything that can get the cycle off can cause hair loss.”
Once you determine the root of your hair woes, there are several options to consider for hair restoration.
Beauty expert Rachel Gower of Upper Hand salon claims that hair transplants have worked for some women but not everyone.
“Only 40 percent of women are actually good candidates,” Gower told ABC Local. “Once you do have it, only about 80 percent of people have seen really good results.”
The salon’s low-level laser treatments are a less expensive option that can work just as well but require more time and effort.
“It will cost several hundred dollars a month and you have to be really committed to it,” Gower told ABC Local. “You may end up being there two or three times a week.”
At-home laser treatment options, like the 300 dollar Hairmax, can save money over the long run.
“You can use it from the comfort of your own home so it’s really easy,” Gower told ABC Local.
As for topical treatments, stores offer hundreds of over the counter products as well as a few prescription-based treatments.
“Only a couple of them have been approved by the FDA for hair regrowth,” Gower told ABC Local. “The only topical product that has been approved for that is Minoxidyl and most people know that as Rogaine.”
According to Gower, Rogaine, which costs about 29 dollars for a two month supply, has proven to work for many women, but they must consistently use the hair loss product exactly as directed.
For those just starting to thin, there are numerous options, including Toppik for 35 dollars.
“What they are is magnetically charged fibers that actually cling to your hair,” Gower told ABC Local. “The cool thing is they don’t come off in the rain. They are very secure.”
Gowers comments that scalp concealers, which come in spray cans, compacts and powders, are the easiest fastest way to conceal thinning hair. Joan scalp makeup is $29.50.
