Can Prince Harry Expect His Own Hair Loss?

by Wendy Travis

The Windsor family line appears to have more than just royal blood in the ancestry. Hair loss is a feature that has been passed down for generations, most recently to the sons of Prince Charles and former Princess Di. While the elder of the two, Prince William, has lost a significant amount of his royal hair, his younger brother Harry appears to be slowly following suit. Recent photos of the 28-year-old prince suggest Harry may be a victim of the genetics of his older brother and other family members, as thinning spots are emerging on his head as well.

The royal heartthrob has been showing signs of traditional male pattern baldness, with thinning around the crown area of his head. John Harris, an expert on hair loss from the Belgravia Centre hair clinic, told the Daily Mail that Prince Harry may have a type of testosterone, dihydro-testosterone, which leads to hair loss on the head, but hair growth on other areas of the body. Harris predicts that Harry could have a very thin head of hair by the time he hits 50, while his older brother could be almost completely bald by the age of 40.

Is Teasing Out?

Prince Harry has been known for his ribbing of his older brother’s hair loss woes for some time. Prince William, at the age of 30, has already lost a significant amount of hair in the front and back, although that did not deter the romantic affections of his now wife, the Duchess of Cambridge. Harry was known to have described his sibling as “already bald aged 12,” and suggesting in a recent painting that William was “given” more hair than he really sported.

Now, teasing may become a thing of the past, unless William decides to get paybacks on his younger brother as his glorious ginger locks slowly become a thing of the past. Both boys appear to take after their father, who began losing some of his hair in his mid-thirties. Charles’s brother and the boys’ uncle, Prince Edward, sported a bald patch similar to the one now seen on Harry by about the same age. Their maternal grandfather, Earl Spencer, also lost a significant amount of hair by middle age.

What Can Harry Do?

While hair loss can be a traumatic experience for men as young as Prince Harry, the good news is there are many options in treatment for male pattern baldness today. If Harry wants to keep his sexy do, he might consider the following:

Topical Solutions – Topical treatments like Rogaine may help some men enjoy modest hair regrowth. The solution works by stimulating hair follicles to produce new hair growth. The solution works best on young men like Harry, who are just beginning to see the signs of hair loss. This product is available over the counter, through drugstores and pharmacies.

Medication – Finasteride, an oral medication known by commercial names of Propecia and Proscar, has been shown to be effective in treating male pattern baldness. However, a small percentage of men experience a decreased libido and other sexual side effects while taking the drug. A young man with a hankering for the party life like Harry may not think it’s worth the risk to regrow a few of his red hairs.

Transplants – Hair transplants have come a long way in recent years, to provide the most natural results possible. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedures are now the standards for efficiency, speed, and precision. Hair follicles are removed one by one from donor sites on the back of the head or other parts of the body. The follicles are then transplanted into the area where hair loss has occurred. New hair typically begins to grow from the transplanted follicles within a few short months.

Vampire Treatments – Another hair loss treatment on the horizon has been used with significant success by scientists in Italy. The procedure involves injections of the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma, which is thought to generate new stem cells that can stimulate hair growth in inactive areas of the scalp.

Poor Prince Harry may be fretting over losing his “sexy bachelor” status with the loss of his hair, but the good news is there are many options available to him. From medication to cosmetic procedures, Harry may be able to keep his gorgeous hair much longer than his balding brother.
