Prevent Post-Pregnancy Hair Loss with These Tips
by Angela Santoriello

Post delivery hair loss is a direct result of childbirth.
According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), directly after giving birth some hair loss will inevitably occur. “The rise in hormones during pregnancy keeps you from losing your hair,” reported the association, adding that after delivery, the hormones return to regular levels. “The normal hair loss that was once delayed during pregnancy may fall out all at once.”
What is inevitable may not be stopped, but it sure can be tamed with a little TLC. Between a healthy diet, prenatal vitamins, relaxation, hydration, a few home remedies and particular personal care, pregnant women can help control some hair loss.
“Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, which contain flavonoids and antioxidants that may provide protection for the hair follicles and encourage growth,” according to the APA. Some of the most effective antioxidants that encourage growth can be found in Vitamins A, C and E, reports Live Strong, adding “antioxidants in food form may play a contributing role in hair growth by providing nutrients that are necessary for normal health functions.”
Speaking of vitamins, prenatal ones also help prevent hair loss after delivery, which is exactly why they should continue to be taken at least three months after birth. By continuing to take prenatal pills, hair growth is encouraged during the unavoidable after-delivery shed.
One of the best ways to ensure less loss is to remaining relaxed. Having a balanced emotional system can keep locks on the head and off the hair brush, according to the Mayo Clinic, reporting that “stress and hair loss can be related” especially when follicles are attacked by a compromised immune system. “Stress and hair loss don’t have to be permanent,” according to the renowned clinic. So while staying relaxed may seem impossible with a newborn, setting aside a short time during the day just for you will literally keep you from pulling out your hair.
Drinking an ideal amount of water and mixing up some home remedies are another two ways of minimizing hair fall after giving birth. Consuming plenty of H20 detoxifies the system, unclogging pores and follicles for healthy hair growth. Like water, other natural ingredients like Chinese hibiscus, beetroot, flax seeds and other organic elements help in slowing down hair loss. Top 10 Home Remedies reports that mixing and charring Chinese hibiscus and coconut oil and sleeping with the oil on the scalp overnight encourages hair growth, “You can also make tea with this flower and use it as a rinse for your hair to encourage proper growth,” reports the website.
Taking oils a step further through scalp massage with potent plant oils promotes growth. An Archives of Dermatology study “found that a daily scalp massage using oils boosted hair growth in 44% of patients,” reported Prevention Magazine.
Lastly, personal hair care is key in keeping hair loss at a minimum. Yes that’s right, the convenient and simple ponytail worn over again during pregnancy could cause hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
And it is not just ponytails, with the academy noting braids, cornrows and hair extensions effecting hair loss. “These styles pull on the hair and can cause tension that leads to breakage,” reported the AAD.
University of California Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology Paradi Mirmirani said “having healthy hair is possible if you know how to care for your hair before and after styling,” according to the ADA. Some personal care tips recommended by the doctor include: thoroughly towel drying hair and allowing half drying before style; brushing lightly, minimally; and use only low heated styling tools on fully dry hair.
