Could Plasma Injections Offer a Cure for Baldness?
by April Maguire

Hair loss is one of the most common problems in the world. Just look around and you’re likely to see its effects on someone close by. In fact, the statistics are somewhat staggering, with over 50% of men over the age of 50 reporting a noticeable amount of hair loss. And if you think women are immune from hair loss, think again. More than 40% of women over the age of 50 report thinning and loss as well.
Yet despite the widespread nature of this problem, modern science has yet to come up with a surefire cure. Yes, topical growth stimulants and oral medications do work for some people, but the success stories are far from glowing. The majority of people who use these types of remedies find that the drugs have no effect or they only stem the tide of hair loss without stimulating any regrowth. Surely there must be a better solution.
As it turns out, there may be. And it’s a process that has already been in use for more than two decades: platelet-rich plasma therapy.
What is PRP?
Although it was first developed back in the ‘70s, it wasn’t until the mid ‘90s that therapies involving platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, rose to prominence. The process behind this kind of treatment is incredibly straightforward. A doctor or technician removes blood from the patient and then spins it in a centrifuge. During the process, the platelet-rich plasma is separated from the other parts of the blood. Finally, this plasma is injected into the treatment site to stimulate cellular recovery and growth.
While PRP treatments have flown mostly under the radar, they have been implemented in a number of different fields. Perhaps most prominently, athletes have been using PRP therapy for years to recover from injuries, as the treatment helps to repair injured tissue. More recently, beauty experts have been using PRP therapy as a skin treatment, since it improves collagen production, increases blood flow and helps to facilitate cellular rejuvenation.
How Does it Affect Hair Loss?
Perhaps not surprisingly, these regenerative properties also make PRP therapy an effective way to treat hair loss. After receiving PRP injections for just a few months, patients report a noticeable decrease in the amount of hair loss, and after six to eight months, the treatment ultimately leads to a significant amount of regrowth. In fact, some patients experience almost a 90% increase in thickness within the first year.
Sadly, however, there is no FDA-approved PRP therapy for hair loss, which means that you’re most likely going to be paying out of pocket. With an average treatment costing $400 or more, that could put a sizeable dent in your bank account pretty quickly. Still, if you have the means, a cure for baldness could be within your reach.
