The Permanent Buzz Cut: Scalp Micro-Pigmentation

by Angela Santoriello

New York photographer Juan Calcano’s family cannot tell the difference between the 32-year-old’s real hair and the Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP) he has had performed.

From East Cost institutes like HIS Hair Clinic in New York to the West Coast institutes like The New Hair Institute Medical Group in Los Angeles, SMP “replicates real shaven follicles on the scalp,” according to HIS Hair Clinic manager Craig Luaricella.

In a Fox news report, the expert likened SMP to tattoos.

“The ink that we use is different. We use a natural-based pigment,” said Luaricella, adding the equipment used has smaller needles that penetrate two skin layers, opposed to that of “a traditional tattoo that goes five layers deep.”

On the West Coast, The New Hair Institute Medical Group has been in business for 23 years. The group reports SMP as “a new and innovative technique that offers an alternative styling option for men and women who do not want, or are not candidates for, hair transplant surgery.”

According to the group, SMP can also be used in hair transplants, “adding to the look of fullness by reducing the contrast,” and for scalp conditions, including genetic male pattern baldness, scarring from alopecia and neurosurgical burns.

No matter which coast, the cost of the procedure remains the same. With varying treatments needed based on patients’ individual needs and hair loss, SMP ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. Calcano needed three four-hour treatments to get the look he wanted, but according to the photographer, who’s paid to make others look good, money makes no difference when it comes to self-confidence.

“I think that is the main part, that you cannot put a price on how you feel,” he said.

With treatment centers all around the world, Scalp Aesthetics claims to be “the world’s most advanced.” From Wales to Washington D.C., the treatment centers have changed the lives of many with SMP. Citing Clayton Porter’s chemotherapy-related hair loss, Scalp Aesthetics reports that the cancer patient who has had three bone marrow transplants and critical chemotherapy treatments in over 100 hospital visits.

Flat lining in two of the three transplants, Porter not only lost much of his hair, he had permanent scarring, according to Scalp Aesthetics, saying it “left him self-conscious and depressed,” and “ended up putting him through the ringer physically as well as leaving him emotionally scarred.” The medical group offered Porter gratis treatment, even paying for the cost of travel, noting the “experience” was “life-changing” for the young man.

Between Calcano and Porter’s stories, it is obvious SMP is a success, lending hope to those who lost their hair for a variety of reasons.
