One Woman's Hair Loss Journey Inspires Others
by Jane Meggitt

The country’s leading hair loss consultant, Amy Gibson, knows exactly what her clients go through. A former actress, Gibson first experienced hair loss at the tender age of 13 – while performing a major role in a soap opera. She was diagnosed with alopecia areata, and eventually lost all of her hair. Today, she is dedicated to helping women with hair loss, and ensuring they avoid the difficult, ineffective treatments she endured.
Love and Life with Hair Loss
Gibson’s company, Created Hair, empowers women through their hair loss journey. She’s also the author of “Sex, Wigs and Whispers – Love and Life with Hair Loss.” For many women, hair loss is tantamount to loss of sexuality. It’s hard to think of bald as beautiful and desirable. Gibson has developed the Pearl Program, which allows women to have sex while wearing a wig – without the need for their partner to know their hair isn’t genuine.
Swimming and Hair Loss
Besides intimacy and hair loss, Gibson’s company has developed a wig permitting women to swim without wearing a bathing cap and risking wig wash-off. As with the intimacy wigs, these headpieces are custom-designed for each client.
Wigs as Accessories
For women undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss is almost as difficult as the cancer diagnosis. For those whose cancer is found in early stages, hair loss through chemo may mark the first time they really feel ill. For them, wigs are a lifesaver until their treatment finishes and their hair grows back. For women suffering from other types of baldness, wigs become a lifelong necessity. Gibson wants women to look at wigs as fun accessories, much like lipsticks or high heels. On the plus side, wigs allow women to change hair styles, colors and lengths instantly, and become different characters.
Pieces for Thinning Hair
Gibson’s company features hair pieces designed for women with bald spots or thinning hair, rather than total hair loss. These include smaller “wiglets” to disguise balding areas, and fall caps attaching to the women’s front hairline.
Amy Gibson’s work has helped women worldwide. Her company is dedicated to giving each customer personal attention and ensuring they understand the entire process. Amy herself faces new challenges, as her hair loss has extended to her eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair. For her, it’s no longer just a matter of choosing a wig to fit her mood on a particular day, but creating the illusions of eyebrows and eyelashes. There’s no doubt she’ll conquer this type of hair loss as well, and go on to inspire even more women.
