Olympic Swimmer Receives FUE Hair Transplant

by Barb Tate

Peter Waterfield is the most successful diver in British Olympic History. He wowed the world with brilliant dives and beautiful form in the 2012 Summer Olympics, but there’s one thing that has always plagued the world renowned athlete. Where Waterfield excels off the diving platform, he has always missed his mark with the strength and fullness of his hair. While not exactly depressed over his stark baldness, Waterfield admits that his image was actually tainted by it. A bald head and strong Cockney accent equated to one thing in many people’s mind: street thug. A hair transplant was the perfect solution to soften Waterfield’s perceived hoodlum status.

Peter Waterfield's History of Hair Loss

Accustomed to the oohs and aahs of beautiful dives, Waterfield never quite received the same approval about his fast receding hair. Peter, 31, began losing his in his late teenage years. A dominant baldness gene in his family quickly wiped out any hopes Waterfield had of starring in a shampoo commercial: he and his brothers all experienced a completely lost hairline by the time they were 18.

Peter Waterfield's Hair Transplant Story

The East-London born diving expert was always met with an odd hostility and intimidation from people. His bare skull and strong Cockney accent gave him the appearance of being a young street thug. His true demeanor could not be further from the truth, but this unfortunate perception led Watersfield to seek out hair transplant surgery and finally extinguish uncertainties, ‘I wanted to soften my whole image and make sure that I was a little more approachable to strangers. The best way to do that was by having a hair transplant.’

Peter chose to undergo a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure - the same treatment Manchester United soccer star Wayne Rooney successfully received in 2011. Before undergoing the restoration, Peter’s hair loss was considered a 5a out of 7, indicating ‘substantial hair loss due to family history.’ Peter had over 4,000 hairs transplanted from the back of his head to the top of his scalp at the Crown Clinic in Manchester. During the procedure 1,500 grafts were transplanted to his hairline on the top of his head and an additional 1, 000 were moved to thicken the hair at the top of his scalp. Although it will take up to a year for Waterfield to experience the complete benefits of the procedure, his confidence and image have increased considerably. “I am so glad that I had it done – I feel so much more confident now. I am really looking forward to being able to grow my hair for the first time since I was a teenager and present a new image of myself to the world."
