Not Just A Bad Hair Day: Female Hair Loss On The Rise
by April Maguire

Do you worry about losing your hair? If so, then you’re not alone. While studies in Britain indicate that 8 million women in the UK currently suffer from hair loss, anecdotal evidence suggests that the true figures may be much higher. According to celebrity hairstylist Philip Kingsley, 70 to 80 percent of the women he sees experience some degree of hair thinning or hair loss.
What the Science Says
There are various reasons that men and women endure hair loss. While hair thinning that results from weight loss, over-styling and certain medications will often resolve on its own, other forms of hair loss are harder to treat. A type of auto-immune disorder, alopecia occurs when the body attacks its own hair follicles. One of the most common causes of female hair loss, alopecia can result in the loss of some or all of the hair on the head and body and be incredibly difficult to treat. In fact, women with this distressing condition may try steroids, vitamins and medicated shampoos as well as treatments like massages and acupuncture. Unfortunately, even if a therapy for alopecia works in the short term, hair loss will often recur in time.
It’s no secret that both men and women worry about losing their hair. However, for women, suffering from hair loss or thinning hair can be exceptionally painful and even make them feel like less of a woman. As a result, a growing opportunity exists for marketers to create products and treatments designed to help women improve both their hair and self-esteem.
Booming Market for Hair Loss Treatments
Currently, the hair loss market focuses on those products designed to improve hair volume and appearance. However, many of these items fail to address the underlying cause of the hair loss. Instead of masking the issue of hair loss, marketers should devote their attention to creating new products to prevent hair from falling out in the first place and help encourage thicker regrowth.
A trichologist and stylist, Philip Kingsley is known for his work with Audrey Hepburn and other stars on issues related to hair health. Recently, Kingsley launched a new collection of hair treatments designed to help women suffering from thinning hair or hair loss. Known as a Trichotherapy kit, the collection include supplements and volumizing products as well as tips for eating healthy.
