New Drug Combo Could Help with Female Hair Loss
by April Maguire
For men, hair loss is somewhat expected. By the age of 50, the overwhelming majority of men experience a noticeable degree of hair loss, and it seems that socially we've simply come to expect it. Unfortunately, female hair loss is another story. Believe it or not, women experience hair loss at only a slightly lower rate than men. By the age of 40, nearly half of all women see a noticeable degree of thinning or loss. Perhaps even more shockingly, by the age of 60 that number jumps to almost 80 percent.
Despite the severity of the problem, however, hair loss solutions have historically only been marketed towards men. For example, it took years for women to have versions of popular hair loss drugs Rogaine and Propecia formulated for them. And even now, hair loss is generally thought of as a male-centric problem.
There are, however, two distinct things that both men and women have in common when it comes to hair loss. First of all, the vast majority of their hair loss is due to a condition called androgenic alopecia, which is more commonly referred to as male-pattern baldness even though it happens to women as well. And the second is that there is no cure.
New Drug Combination
Given the sheer number of women who suffer from hair loss, it's no surprise that researchers are scrambling to find a cure. Sometimes that means coming up with new drugs, and sometimes that means using existing treatments in new ways. Recently, a team in Australia led a study looking at the effects of pairing Minoxidi, the active drug in Rogaine, and Spironolactone, a drug that is commonly used to treat high blood pressure.
According to the study published in the International Journal of Dermatology, the case study tracked a group of 100 women suffering from androgenic alopecia over the course of one year. During that time, they were each given 25mg of Spironolactone and .25 mg of minoxidil once a day. The results of this drug combination were incredibly promising. Not only did the group experience a reduction in hair shedding, but they also saw an increase in overall thickness and growth. Additionally, thanks to the Spironolactone, most of the women saw a reduction in their blood pressure. And best of all, only eight of the women experienced any negative side effects.
While this method of treatment is still in the trial phase, these initial results show some promise. It may not represent the outright cure that hair loss sufferers are hoping for, but if this treatment methodology is improved, it could lead to a valuable solution to female hair loss in the relatively near future.
