Men Should Look For These Early Signs of Hair Loss

by April Maguire

For men, hair loss can sometimes seem inevitable, and the numbers are certainly scary. By the time they reach 40, more than 60% of men experience a noticeable amount of thinning or loss. By the age of 60, that number is north of 80%. Unfortunately, most of that hair loss is due to male-pattern baldness, a genetic condition whose more scientific name is androgenic alopecia. Currently, there is no cure for male pattern baldness, nor is there a surefire way to stop it entirely.

However, if you notice the signs early enough, there are some preventative measures that you can take, such as using over-the-counter hair regrowth treatments or supplements to help strengthen your hair and keep it as healthy as possible. So what red flags should you be looking for if you're worried about hair loss? Here are some of the most common.

Hair Everywhere

Have you noticed a few extra hairs on your pillow when you wake up in the morning? Or is your shower drain getting clogged more frequently? If so, then you may be losing hairs at an accelerated rate. This excess shedding often means that your hair isn't staying in the growing phase for as long, which likely means that male-pattern baldness is starting to set in.

Difference in Texture

Touch the hair at the front of your hairline or at the crown of your head. Now touch the hair along the sides of your head. If you noticed that the sides felt thicker and fuller, then male-pattern baldness may be to blame. As the name implies, this type of hair loss occurs in a regular pattern, starting at the hairline and at the crown of the head. So thinness in these areas is cause for concern.

Change in Hairline

Speaking of your hairline, take a close look at it. If you notice that the sides are receding backwards, forming an M shape along the front of your forehead, then that's one of the classic signs of male-pattern baldness. Over time, the front portion will continue to recede, leaving you with a swath of thinning hair that stretches from your forehead all the way back toward the crown of your head.

Check Old Pictures

Perhaps the best way to spot hair loss is to take a look at some old pictures. In particular, you want to find some that are one to five years old. If you notice that your hair looks thicker and that your forehead seems smaller in old snapshots, well, then you have photographic evidence that your hair is changing, and probably not for the better.

Male-pattern baldness happens to most men, but it doesn't have to proceed unabated. So if your hair is thinning, take proactive steps now, and you might just be able to hold on to your lovely locks for years to come.
