Since time immemorial, people have relied on rosemary to boost their health and well-being. The ancients considered it a sacred plant. If you’re only familiar with rosemary for cooking, there’s a whole world out there of usefulness for skin and hair. Rosemary essential oil contains high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients. Always look for organic, 100 percent therapeutic grade rosemary and other essential oils.

Healthy Scalp

Rosemary oil can help you maintain a healthy scalp and head of hair. It may also aid in preventing hair loss. In fact, rosemary may prove as beneficial in stopping hair loss as the FDA-approved drug minoxidil, as per a 2015 study. Rosemary is especially effective for men experiencing male pattern baldness. This study also showed that those using minoxidil had a higher incidence of itchy scalp than those using the rosemary preparation. It is possible that some people in the study were sensitive or allergic to minoxidil, which was not the case with the natural herb. If a fungal or bacterial infection is causing hair loss, rosemary oil may eliminate the infection and restore growth.

Use a 2 percent rosemary essential oil dilution with aloe vera gel or jojoba oil. Apply the oil to your scalp every night, then shampoo out in the morning. Don’t expect instant results – it should take about six months of nightly application, but you should notice a difference in the health of your hair and less hair loss. If hair loss isn’t an issue but you want a healthier scalp, you can use the treatment once or twice weekly. Another rosemary plus: There is some evidence that the regular use of the oil can prevent or reverse premature graying.

Acne Fighter

If you’re constantly battling breakouts, rosemary is on your side. The plant has strong antiseptic properties to kill acne-causing bacteria. Create a toner to fight inflammation and minimize zits by combining one-quarter cup fresh rosemary with a half cup each of rosewater and alcohol-free witch hazel. Put the ingredients in a saucepan, and allow them to simmer. Once the mixture bubbles, turn off the heat and cover the pan. Let the concoction steep until it cools off. Put the toner into a clean jar, and add the date you brewed it. You must use the mixture within two months. Apply to your skin morning and evening after cleansing.
