Comedian Louis C.K. Talks Hair Loss in Online Chat

Comedian, actor, screenwriter, and director Louis C.K. has a lot to be happy about. Not only has the 44-year-old been performing stand up for over two decades and scoring writing gigs on such shows as The Late Show with David Letterman and the Emmy nominated The Chris Rock Show, but C.K. recently won internet fame and financial backing for various pet projects by releasing his fourth full-length comedy special, Live at the Beacon Theater, as an independent five buck download, netting him well over a million dollars.
Much of his internet following stems from websites like Reddit.com, an online community that hosts daily forum-style interviews called AMA’s, which stands for “Ask Me Anything.” Louis C.K’s recent return to the site brought about a barrage of questions ranging from the pithy to the outlandish, but one user asked about the comedian’s iconic and progressing hair loss: “How did you come to terms with the fact that one day you will no longer have hair on the top of your head?”
Instead of seizing the opportunity with one of his trademark self-deprecating and grumpy tirades, C.K. answered the question with nonchalance, stating, “I remember the day I saw my hair was thinning. I don’t remember caring much. I don’t care. It’s just hair. It never bothered me much.…I have a feeling dead people get really mad when we complain about losing hair.”
Of course this isn’t the first time Louis C.K.’s male pattern baldness has come up. The comedian’s hair loss stems from androgenic alopecia, involving the slow shriveling of hair follicles by the hormone dihydrotestosterone, a process he described in the online forum as occurring “veeery slowly [sic].”
Perhaps because of his mastery with live comedic storytelling, C.K.’s straightforward online response stands in stark contrast with his remarks on Conan in 2011. During the talk show he claimed he’d trade bodies and lives with a homeless person who had a beautiful head of hair, because the newly hairy C.K. could “take a shower, go to a comedy club, and in a few years be [himself again] with hair” while the homeless man in his body would only squander his money back to destitution and be bald on top of it. As tongue-in-cheek as the response was, a survey conducted by Men’s Health suggested many men have a similar mindset when it comes to hair loss. Of 1,400 men who participated, 60% valued a full head of hair over the prospect of more money or friends.
Louis C.K. has also has suffered hair loss jokes on his own expense, such as when Esquire’s online edition referenced C.K.’s unique balding type as “the Bay” or “when the recession at your temples meets in the middle and starts its march to the back of your head.” But while many people like Louis C.K. choose to laugh off their hair loss, simple and affordable methods exist to slow hair fall or even replenish your natural hairline.
