Let Chili Powder Give Your Hair the Growth Kick It Needs!
by April Maguire

Roughly 50 percent of us will experience hair loss at some point in our lives. So far, medical science has yet to uncover a surefire way to help fight hair loss. This lack of success has led people to try to discover their own, homegrown methods for dealing with this pervasive problem.
Recently, a health and beauty blogger named Ishika Sachdev posted a video explaining her method for reducing hair loss. Sachdev uses an old family recipe to create a hair-growing paste that she applies to her scalp. Oddly, the main ingredient in this paste is chili powder.
The Science Behind Hair Growth
Can chili powder really be used to battle hair loss? According to some dermatologists, the answer, surprisingly, is yes.
The active ingredient found in chili powder is capsaicin. This compound is naturally occurring and has traditionally been used as a homeopathic anti-inflammatory. However, a recent study also found that capsaicin diminishes hair loss and even promotes hair growth in people suffering from alopecia.
Capsaicin’s effectiveness as a hair loss supplement is due to its ability to increase blood flow. More blood flowing into the scalp not only strengthens existing hair follicles, but it can also result in the growth of brand-new follicles.
Doctors are quick to point out though that these hair-growing properties are hardly limited to chili powder. Other herbs such as lavender, stinging nettle and rosemary have also proven to be effective supplements in the battle against hair loss.
Regrowing Hair with Chili Powder
While the idea of using chili powder to regrow hair may seem odd, Sachdev swears by it. According to the blogger, she has suffered from thinning hair for years. Three months ago, however, she began using the homemade chili powder-infused balm, a concoction that also includes almond or coconut oil. Since then, Sachdev claims that her hair is denser, stronger and healthier. She even says that the chili oil is causing new hairs to sprout.
Despite Sachdev’s success, some doctors caution against this homemade chili oil approach. Just like the skin on your face, the skin on the top of your head is very sensitive. Applying chili powder directly to the scalp can result in irritation, swelling or even burning. You also have to be careful that the oil doesn’t get around or in your eyes.
Still, for those seeking a remedy to hair loss, chili-infused oil is a simple solution to try. So if you’re suffering from hair loss, and feeling a little adventurous, maybe whip up a batch and see what happens.
