Is the Cure for Hair Loss Just Around The Corner?

Hair loss is a problem. A big one. According to the most recent statistics, roughly 65% of men suffer a noticeable amount of hair loss by the time they're 60, and women don't fare much better, with more than 50% experiencing hair loss by the age of 60. Given those numbers, there are undoubtedly millions of people out there that would love to have a cure for hair loss. Unfortunately, scientists are yet to come up with one. Or is there already a hair loss cure out there that has been hiding in plain sight?
Some of the most popular drugs were originally intended to solve other problems. Botox, for example, was created to treat problems with eye muscles. Similarly, Viagra was developed as a blood pressure medication. Yet in both cases, it was the side effects of these drugs that proved to be most useful. So is there a drug out there that counts hair growth as one of its side effects? As it turns out, there is.
Introducing Cyclosporine A
The drug in question is called Cyclosporine A, which has been around for decades. It's an immunosuppressive drug that is used to treat a wide array of issues, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and organ rejection following a transplant. It also has the rather unpleasant side effect of growing patches of hair in places where people might not necessarily want hair. Scientist began to wonder, however, if this side effect could be harnessed for good instead of evil.
The team tested the drug on hair follicles donated by more than 40 different patients. What they discovered was that Cyclosporine A reduced the growth of a protein that actually stops hair growth within the follicles. However, a new problem quickly emerged. Hair growth may be one side effect of Cyclosporine A, but there are others that less pleasant. So the scientists tracked down another compound, known as WAY-316606, that offers the same benefits but none of the drawbacks.
While the results have been positive thus far, they are still too narrow to say definitely whether or not this area of study could provide a cure for hair loss. The next stage is clinical trials, allowing the researchers to see if WAY-316606 is both effective and safe. Still, we could be looking at the first steps to a surefire cure for baldness that could help millions of people around the globe.
