How to Stop Hair Loss

by April Maguire

Did you know that losing your hair is perfectly natural? It's true. In fact, most of us lose up to 100 hairs a day on average. The problem, however, is when those hairs stop being replaced by new ones, because that's when thinning and ultimately baldness happens.

Why Is Your Hair Falling Out?

Your hair can fall out for a variety of reasons. In fact, one of the most common is called traction alopecia. This type of hair loss occurs when the follicles are put under undue stress, typically from tight ponytails, braids, extension or cornrows. The stress causes the follicles to shut down and stop producing hair. Alternatively, changes in lifestyle, such as a new diet, going on a new birth control medication, or even experiencing a stressful event, like the loss of a loved one, can also cause a disruption in hair growth.

While all of these situations can cause hair loss, by far the most common cause is genetics. Whether you know it as male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness or by its scientific name, androgenic alopecia, this condition is responsible for the vast majority of hair loss. With androgenic alopecia, the follicles shrink over time, producing hairs that are finer and finer until the follicles stop growing hair altogether.

How to Stop Hair Loss

The first step to curbing hair loss is determining the cause. Did you start taking a new medication, such as blood thinners, anti-depressants, acne medicine, or any dug that could be interacting with your hormones? Did you start a new diet, particularly one that is low on carbs and high on protein? Are you wearing your hair in a style that could be damaging your follicles?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you may be in luck. Typically, once you stop engaging in the activity that is causing your hair to fall out, then it will grow back on its own. For genetic causes of hair loss, however, the remedies can be a little trickier.

One of the easiest hair loss treatments to use are over-the-counter products such as Rogaine and Propecia, which have been proven to stop hair loss and even encourage regrowth in some users. Alternatively, hair transplantation procedures can take healthy follicles from the back part of your head and transfer them to areas where hair has been lost. Or if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you could try low-level laser therapy, which stimulates the follicles and encourages regrowth.

Even though there is no cure for baldness, there are steps you can take to reduce your hair loss and even help your hair to grow back. All you have to do is identify the source of the problem then take proactive measures to try and correct it.
