How To: Revamp Your Haircare Regimen

by Matthew Dello Russo

Winter can be tough on even the sturdiest of manes. With the dry air, the heat treatments, and the increased use of hats and scarves, your hair is probably starting to feel the pain of the year’s most frigid months. Is it breaking easily? Do you have more split ends than usual? Has it grown dull and lost its shine? Try a DIY hair mask to revitalize those locks!

Recipe:

  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey

This recipe can be doubled for individuals with longer or thicker hair. Whisk the ingredients together until well-blended. Apply the mixture throughout damp hair, giving special attention to dead ends. This mask will work wonders on dry or fried hair!

If you’ve got longer hair, it helps to tie it up in a bun. Cover that hair with a shower cap or towel and let the mask sit for 25-35 minutes. Wash out the mask with shampoo and conditioner. For best results, apply the mask once weekly.

Recipe:

  • 1 Egg
  • 2 Tbsp. Mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey

Blend these ingredients together with a food processor or whisker until they are well mixed. Spread the mask evenly throughout your damp hair, taking care to tie it up or cover with a shower cap. Let the mask sit for 30 minutes. The olive oil in this mask will help introduce healthy fats and natural oils to your hair, keeping it silky smooth.

Wash out the mask with shampoo and conditioner. For best results, apply the mask once weekly. Double recipe for long hair.

Recipe:

  • 1/2 Sliced Avocado
  • 1/4 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey

Mash the avocado and combine with the other ingredients, which should be blended together until smooth. Take the mask and apply throughout hair after the shower, when it is it still damp. If you’ve got more hair to deal with, tie it up. Then, cover hair with a shower cap or towel and let the mask sit for 30 minutes. Wash out the mask with a cleansing conditioner or co-wash. For best results, apply the mask once weekly. Double recipe for long hair.

Recipe:

  • 1 Sliced Banana
  • 2 Tbsp. Plain Yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey

Mash the banana and add it to the other ingredients, which should be whisked together until smooth. Distribute the mask evenly throughout still-damp hair, taking care to target split ends and roots. Again, cover the treated hair with a shower cap or towel for 45 minutes, and wash out the mask with shampoo and conditioner. For best results, apply the mask twice weekly. Double recipe for long hair.

Recipe:

  • 1/4 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Juiced Lemon
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey

Combine ingredients in a blender or whisk together until well-blended. Apply the mask evenly throughout damp hair. If you have long hair, tie it up. Then, cover hair with a shower cap or towel and let the mask sit for 30 minutes. Wash out the mask with shampoo & conditioner. For best results, apply the mask once weekly. Double recipe for long hair.
