How Deion Sanders is Dealing with Hair Loss

by Jane Meggitt

Hall of Famer Deion Sanders is no stranger to an issue affecting millions of men across the country: hair loss. The two-time Super Bowl champion initially addressed his hair loss by shaving his head, which became his signature look. At some point, though, Sanders decided to take the plunge and have hair plugs installed, and now he’s a big advocate of the procedure, taking to Instagram and other social media to tout the results.

F.U.E. Transplant

Sanders underwent his hair transplant at Chicago’s RESTORE studio. He had Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) done, which involves removing “donor” hairs from the back of the head. The extraction method doesn’t require any use of a scalpel or stitches, so no tissue is removed, and no scarring occurs. The donor hairs are then transplanted onto bald area of the head.

FUE is often confused with Follicular Hair Transplantation (FUT), but they are different operations. With FUT, an entire strip of tissue with hair is removed from the back of the head, and “donor follicles” are removed and later transplanted onto the bald area. The extraction will leave a scar at the back of the head where follicles were removed. Patients report greater discomfort with FUT than with FUE. However, FUT generally costs less than a comparable FUE procedure.

A Day of Hair Restoration

Anyone undergoing the FUE transplant should figure on spending most of the day at the hair restoration clinic. While relaxing by watching TV or checking out their tablets or other devices, patients undergo the hair removal and the subsequent transplanting. It’s not a painful process. Patients can go back to work after the procedure or the following day.

The Timeline

While patients will see changes in their hair growth over the next few weeks, the real results don’t become obvious for a few months. About four months post-FUE, the growth become noticeable. Within seven months, hair is about 50 percent through its eventual growth, and full growth is attained by the first anniversary of the procedure.

A Satisfied Customer

There’s no question Deion Sanders is very happy with the results of his FUE procedure. He’s given lots of interviews extolling the benefits of FUE and the results are undeniable. Of course, most men undergoing FUE aren’t famous football players, but it’s likely that have something else in common with Sanders besides balding: Satisfaction with a new head of hair.
