Helping Hair Loss One Wig at a Time

According to the American Hair Loss Association women make up about 40% of American hair loss sufferers. For these women, the disease can cause a lot of psychological damage and result in low confidence and self-esteem. One hairdresser is combating this problem one wig at a time.

How it Started

Merria Deerman is an award-winning hairdresser and wigmaker who has her own salon in New York City. She first discovered her skill to help women with her wigs when she was still studying at the Vancouver Film School. At that time Merria’s grandmother had cancer and had lost most of her hair due to chemotherapy treatments. When her grandmother complained that her wig was too scratchy and fake, Merria took took it apart and customized the wig to her grandmother’s tastes. The remade wig was perfect and gave her grandmother the confidence to dance, drink, meet people, and have fun again.

After the death of her grandmother, Merria continued to work in a salon. There she made a wig for one of the partners who was also going through chemotherapy. Loving the wig and the confidence it brought to her, the partner encouraged Merria to further pursue her passion for wig making.

In the process of learning, Merria started to question why there wasn’t more help for those women who suffer from hair loss. She didn’t understand why the salon industry couldn’t help women who were experiencing hair loss and instead made them feel as if they could no longer visit the salon because of their disease.

Merria’s Mission

Seeing this problem, Merria decided that her mission was to help alleviate the painful psychological effects of hair loss on women by teaching them about wigs and designing personalized hairpieces for women. Doing so, she gives them back their identity. As Merria says in the Huffington Post, “When a wig is well made we don’t see it. That is what I offer my clients. Their identity is not their disease.”

Merria’s goal is to return confidence to women who are going through hair loss. For her “there is nothing better than hearing someone whose confidence has been restored.” No women should have to “stop ‘living’ because it’s too difficult to look in the mirror or because they don’t want to deal with public discrimination.” Having just opened her own salon in New York City, Merria is well on her way to achieving her mission.
