Men aren’t the only gender prone to hair loss as they age. Up to 70 percent of women will experience hair loss as well, although relatively few of them go completely bald compared to their male counterparts. While some female hair loss is genetic and beyond anyone’s ability to control, there are steps you can take to minimize hair loss and keep your locks as thick and healthy as possible.

Regular Exercise

A regular exercise program not only improves your body and reduces stress, but can lower the rate of hair loss. That’s because the increased blood flow resulting from exercise sends nutrients and oxygen to your hair follicles, which keeps the scalp in good condition. If you smoke, quit. On top of all the other health problems it can cause or aggravate, smoking prevents nutrients from reaching your hair follicles.

Avoid Tight Styles

Braids, cornrows, weaves, ponytails and buns all have one thing in common: They incur constant tension on the hair. That, in turn, leads to breakage and balding and a condition known as traction alopecia. This type of hair loss occurs more often at the hairline or as an increasingly widening part.

Skip Bleach, Relaxers and Other Harsh Chemicals

Using harsh chemicals on the hair, whether bleach, relaxers, perms or other products, can cause hair loss over time. If you want to change your hair color, consult your stylist for the safest products to use.

Minoxidil

Women experiencing substantial hair loss may want to consider using the hair loss medication Minoxidil, sold under the brand name Rogaine, among other trade names. It is the only FDA-approved drug for the treatment of female pattern baldness. Apply Minoxidil topically to the scalp twice daily. While the product is available over the counter – and Minoxidil for women is 2 percent while that for men is 5 percent – it is wise to visit a doctor if you are experiencing serious hair loss. It is always possible that some underlying medical condition could cause your hair loss, and that requires proper treatment.

Follicular Unit Transplants

In a worst-case scenario, hair falls out and bald spots remain. For some women, a surgery known as follicular unit transplants (FUT) can help. The process consists of removing hair follicles from plentiful areas, such as the back of the head, and transplanting them onto the bald areas. Once the hair grows in, it appears completely natural, since it is your hair, after all.
