From Oysters to Spinach: The Best Eats for Strong Hair
by Angela Santoriello
Want to avoid brittle hair that breaks?
Then get out your pen and add some of this strong hair fare to your grocery shopping list.
The first food to drop in your basket is oysters. SUNY Downstate Medical Center Asst. Clinical Professor of Dermatology Dr. Jessica Krant explains how oysters are directly related to a having a healthy ton of tresses.
“Oysters have zinc, which is often overlooked hair nutrient that can lead to severe loss if neglected,” said Krant to Fox News Magazine. “Oysters also provide selenium, another important hair building block.”
Also suggesting oysters in the diet, a U.S. News report mentions mackerel fish, which is high in Omega-3 fatty acids that support scalp health. Add sweet potatoes as a side and you can double your daily allowance in one meal since sweet potatoes, “are packed with beta-carotene, which your body converts to Vitamin A, a nourishing agent for your hair and skin.”
Author of Fire-Up Your Fat Burn and health coach Lori Shemek adds how important vitamin A is too having a healthy head of hair.
“Carrots have a high concentration of vitamin A, which helps promote hair and scalp health,” said Shemek to Fox News Magazine. “A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to hair loss as well. Vitamin A plays a role in sebum production, much like spinach, and a diet rich in carrots can lead to faster hair growth through healthy sebum production.”
Speaking of spinach, Glamour magazine reports that a “good portion” of the vegetable that kept Popeye pumped is also good for the hair.
“Leafy greens, like spinach, provide an excellent source of vitamin A, C, folic acid zinc and strengthening natural collagen, among other nutrients,” according to the beauty magazine.
Add eggs to the list and better boost your vitamin B intake and all its benefits, according to Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi.
“Eggs are a great food for healthy hair,” she said, adding, “They are rich in vitamin B5 and B12 to stimulate hair growth as well as biotin, which thickens the hair shaft.”
Thick, shiny locks lye in eating plenty of poultry that is high in protein. Chicken is the perfect poultry pick since it is a lean source of protein, not adding fat while supplying fortifying hair minerals. Keeping calories low, specific fish strengthens hair like salmon that is a “fantastic hair food,” according to Tanzi. The doctor notes the pink fish is filled with protein, selenium and fish oil that grow and give hair strength. “Not only can salmon be prepared in a variety of ways, but it’s also a noteworthy dinner option if you’re counting calories,” she added.
One way to prepare salmon is with walnuts, another great food source for healthy hair, according to Shemek. “Walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids, and these oils contribute to the elasticity of your hair, as well as growth,” said Shemek. “If you don’t have enough oils in the body, you will experience breakage and brittle hair.”
Lastly, lentils are great for keeping locks looking good.
“As well as protein and carbs, the pulses are packed full of folic acid, or iron, which is essential for transporting oxygen from your blood to your scalp and hair follicles,” according to Glamour. “Good scalp circulation means quicker, stronger hair growth and faster cell renewal.
With almost a dozen foods for fortified hair on the list, there are plenty of ingredients and recipes to mix together for a good meal and a healthy set of tresses.
