You are what you eat – and what you eat can affect the health and strength of your hair. If you suffer from hair loss, consuming foods rich in particular nutrients can lessen thinning and improve your hair quality. Of course, the first step is ridding your diet of junk, sugary and processed food. They aren’t good for your overall health, and that’s reflected in the state of your hair.
Eggs
Eggs are full of omega-6 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin B-12 and protein, all essential for hair growth. Whether you prefer them scrambled, over easy or hard-boiled, make eggs a regular part of your diet to boost your hair volume.
Dairy Products
Dairy products contain many of the same nutrients as eggs, as well as plenty of biotin. Also known as vitamin B-7, biotin is a prime supplement for combatting hair loss, but it’s best to consume it in a food form. Biotin is necessary for keratin production, an essential hair protein. Yogurt and low fat milks are your best bet.
Fish
Fish is a double duty health food, as it supports both skin and hair. Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids, vital for hair and skin health as well as hair growth. Fish also contains vitamins A, D, E and K, necessary for overall health.
Spinach
Popeye didn’t have much in the way of hair, but perhaps he suffered from male pattern baldness. Spinach is a superfood when it comes to hair health. Lack of iron is a major culprit when it comes to hair loss, and spinach is loaded with this mineral. In addition, the vitamin A found in spinach produces sebum, which acts as a hair conditioner and nourishes the scalp. If you’re in search of shiny tresses, make sure spinach is on your plate on a regular basis.
Walnuts
If you’ve giving up junk foods in a quest for hair health, what do you do for snacks? Walnuts are a good choice, although their high fat content means you shouldn’t eat too many of them at one sitting if you want to maintain your figure. Still, several walnuts daily can help your hair, as they are rich in biotin and other B vitamins, as well as the powerful antioxidant vitamin E. Walnuts also contain plenty of protein.
