Five Early Signs of Hair Loss

by Jane Meggitt

By the time most people notice they’re losing hair, the process has been going on for some time. By recognizing the early, almost “invisible” signs of hair loss, you can get a jump start on treatment and possibly prolong the amount of time before baldness really shows. A trip to the dermatologist can verify whether your suspected hair loss is real. If you have a family history of baldness, you’re especially vulnerable.

Hair Texture Changes

If your hair has always been fairly thick, but start appearing finer, you’re probably not imagining it. Changes in hair texture are one of those early signs of future hair loss.

Post-Styling Changes

If a new haircut or style makes you feel like you have less hair, trust your instincts. Ask your barber or stylist if they’ve chosen to cut your hair in a way that hides thinning. If you’ve been a client a long time, they’re familiar with your hair and notice changes you might not see on a daily basis.

Ponytail Thinning

For women and men who wear their hair in a ponytail, extra twists to keep the ponytail in place are a warning sign of hair or texture thinning. The exception is using a old hair tie to keep the ponytail in place. These ties lose their elasticity after a while, so replace them regularly. If you still require lots of twisting with a new hair tie, there’s a problem.

Sink and Shower Hair

Every time you brush or shampoo your hair, small amounts will come out. That’s natural shedding, and you probably have a good idea of your average daily hair loss. If your comb or brush seems to have a lot more hair on them than usual, or there’s a lot of hair in the sink or shower, that’s a red flag for early hair loss. The same holds true if you find excess hair on your pillows when you get up in the morning.

Temples and Part

The temples and part don’t contain as much hair as the rest of your head. If you notice thinning hair on the temples or a widening part, odds are you’re losing hair other parts of your scalp, but those losses aren’t yet obvious.

Depending on the diagnosis, your dermatologist may recommend topical medications to reduce hair thinning, or suggest undergoing laser treatment for hair growth stimulation. The earlier your hair loss is diagnosed, the better the potential outcome.
