Five Aesthetic Solutions for Hair Loss
by Alexandra Kilpatrick

Everyday hair loss is a common problem among aging women, but the topic is taboo. Luckily, AARP offers five solutions for looks that work after hair loss occurs.
Go shorter
Lengthier hair does not necessarily translate to better looking hair. Short hair, on the other hand, boasts of style, attitude and guts. Countless celebrities, including Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Ellen Barkin, Kris Jenner, Halle Berry, Lisa Rinna, Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda, have made shorter locks their signature look. If you’re afraid to chop your hair off all at once, try on a wig first or gradually go shorter over the course of several months.
Layer and loosen up
Perfectly styled hair tends to reveal bald spots on the scalp more than tousled hair. Camaflouge your scalp by layering and adding volume to your hair with a styling mist. The amount of layering depends on both hair texture and the overall look you want. A choppy bob with long layers at the ends and breezy side-swept bangs looks soft, feminine and classic, while all-over irregular-length piece-y layers look edgier.
Upgrade your technology
While it may still work, an old blowdryer can fry, dry and damage your hair. Splurge for a new ionic dryer with infrared or tourmaline technology. Such dryers shorten drying time since negative ions evaporate water molecules faster and infrared waves dry hair from the inside out. Cheaper models burn out quickly, but newer ionic dryers offer super lightweight, multiple heat and power settings for total control, a cold-shot button, a nozzle attachment and a quiet motor.
Make blowouts quicker
The faster you dry and style the hair, the better and healthier it will be. Spray freshly washed hair with a light volumizing mist for texture and lift at the roots. Bend at your waist and rake your fingers through your hair, ruffling sections or layers while moving the dryer around. Rather than aiming for perfection, dry 75 or 80 percent of your hair or 100 percent if your cut is short and choppy. Make sure to use a round brush to finish heat styling medium-length layers.
Eat better
Eating well improves the health of your body as well as your hair within six months. With three inches of new growth at a rate of half an inch per month, you will see a difference. Bangs tend to show results first. Make sure you are eating a healthy balance of protein, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Supplement your diet with hair supplements containing biotin, amino acids, B vitamins and marine protein.
