Is Dry Shampoo Ruining People's Hair?
by April Maguire

Washing your hair on a daily basis is problematic for a number of reasons. First, washing and conditioning that often can actually strip your hair of essential oils and nutrients. Also, the hot water from the shower can do damage to your roots and cause your hair to dry out.
For these reasons, dry shampoo has been hailed as a beauty miracle over the last several years. According to users and a wide array of beauty experts, dry shampoo cleanses, removes the build-up of oil from your hair, and gives your lovely locks a natural bounce and shine. Additionally, it's incredibly convenient and easy to use. Just a few quick sprays, run a brush or your fingers through your hair, and you're done.
Unfortunately however, dry shampoo may not be the hair care godsend that we've been waiting for. Recently, numerous people have come forward claiming that dry shampoo is causing them to lose their hair. And as that drumbeat of negativity has grown over the last few months, several hair care and beauty experts have started to warn their clients to avoid dry shampoo at all costs.
So is dry shampoo as bad as some people say? Let's look at the facts.
Use Only as Directed
Dry shampoo is sold readily in stores across the country, so that must mean it's safe, right? Well, not necessarily. Although it's hard to believe, the FDA doesn't have strong regulatory control on what can and can't be sold in stores, especially when it comes to cosmetics, and companies aren't legally obligated to sell products that are 100% safe for consumers.
Still, companies that make dry shampoo, such as Batiste, swear that their products are safe and beneficial...so long as consumers use them as directed. And this seems to be where the flaw with dry shampoo comes into play.
If you use dry shampoo too often or apply too much of it at once, it can build up on the scalp and cause massive problems. Having gobs of dry shampoo sitting on your scalp can trap bacteria around follicles, damaging the root of your hairs and causing them to fall out. Additionally, it can cause scalp irritation, acne breakouts, itching and mild-to-severe pain.
So when it comes to using dry shampoo, pay attention to how your body is reacting to it. If you're getting healthy, lively, oil-free locks by using it a couple of times a week, then keep using it. If, however, you notice irritation, pain or hairs falling out, then stop using it immediately, and your hair should recover on its own.
