You’ve started a new diet and the pounds are starting to shed. Unfortunately, your hair is also shedding, an unforeseen but common side effect of many crash diets. You can lose weight and keep your hair, but doing so requires the right type of diet. For best results, avoid diets found on the internet and ask your doctor about the right diet for your needs.
Too Little Protein
A major reason that hair falls out when people start dieting is that they aren’t consuming sufficient protein. When the body doesn’t receive enough protein, hair loss can result. Just make sure while dieting that you’re eating enough protein and nutrients to keep your hair – and skin – in good condition.
Best Foods for Hair and Weight Loss
You know to avoid processed, junk and sugary foods while trying to lose weight. What exactly should you eat to keep yourself healthy and shed pounds without shedding hair? Here are some suggestions:
- Eggs
- Poultry
- Fish
- Soy
- Leafy greens
- Dairy products
- Beans
- Legumes
- Red meat
Eating a few nuts a day, such as Brazil nuts, will give your body adequate amounts of selenium, a mineral that can prevent hair loss. Moderate consumption of these foods, along with a good exercise program, will help you lose weight efficiently but gradually. “Crash” diets may result in faster weight loss, but may have deleterious effects beyond hair thinning and loss. In fact, crash dieting is a major contributor to hair loss a few months after the diet has ended, since hair loss is related to the hair growth cycle.
Take Supplements
Taking certain supplements while dieting ensures not only that you receive the right vitamins and minerals, but can enhance your hair. A biotin supplement aids your skin, hair and nails. In the body, your gut produces biotin, so it’s wise to consider taking a probiotic supplement to maintain gut health. If you don’t eat a lot of fish or don’t particularly like it, consider taking fish oil supplements instead. Other supplements to consider taking while dieting to prevent hair loss include flax-seed oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids; zinc, which helps maintain scalp health, and vitamin C, which helps sebum production. This natural oil keeps hair strong and protects it. Vitamin A is another good supplement for hair health, but taking it in the form of beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A in the body, is the best way to do it.
