Did Ancient Egypt Hold the Secrets to Hair Restoration?
by Angela Santoriello
Ancient Egyptians and alopecia, who would have thought?
The most archaic written remedies for hair loss date back to 3,000 BC, according to Bauman Medical Group Founder and Director Alan Bauman.
A Quirky Prescription
“They prescribed an unusual combination of herbs: a mixture of iron oxide, red lead, onions, alabaster, honey and animal fats,” the board-certified hair restoration physician said in a Prevention magazine report.
Based off of a Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review evaluating natural treatments for hair loss, the report lists an array of remedies that can be found right in the refrigerator. Instead of pulling out a fresh crisp fruit to eat, remove it with the intention of having fuller thicker hair.
Long gone are the days when an apple just kept the doctor away, according to a Tsukuba research team that revealed “unripe apples contain Procyanidin B-2, a natural compound that appears to handle proteins in a way that makes new hair grow,” in a Livestrong.com article. The chemicals and antioxidants in an apple are excellent and can even be found in oral supplements and apple seed shampoos.
All Natural Combination-Shampoo: The Power of Eggs
For those who cannot eat fruit, there are many other natural ingredients. Rather than using rosemary, lemon grass or honey for an exotic dish or relaxing cup of tea, consider the natural qualities they hold for hair loss. When applied to the scalp, rosemary improves blood circulation by irritating the skin, making it a powerful herb for preventative measures. Lemon grass is an antibacterial that strengthens hair follicles and nourishes the scalp for healthy growth. Often used at the first signs of balding, honey promotes growth with its antioxidant and fungicidal elements.
The all natural list does not stop there. Onion juice, hot peppers, hibiscus, aloe vera, amla, coconut oil and sage all hold compounds that help combat hair loss. Packed with protein, eggs help halt baldness, making it one of the most popular all natural methods of treatment. Another Livestrong.com report boasted even better news for the egg than the apple, saying they are rich in sulfur, selenium, iron, iodine and other nutrients.
“Hair is composed of 70 percent keratin protein, so egg protein helps rebuild damaged hair by filling in weakened spots along the hair strand, which temporarily strengthens the hair,” the report stated, noting the 3.6 to 6.5 grams of protein an egg has makes it an intense treatment. “Including egg conditioning in your hair regimen can help you maintain strong hair, which is essential for growth.”
Achieve powerful results by mixing an egg with one tablespoon of olive oil and applying it on the scalp and hair after shampooing then leaving the mixture 20 minutes underneath a shower cap. This intense protein treatment should be used sparingly since it can damage hair if overused, as with all other natural remedies.
So next time you consider a synthetic cure for hair loss, take a look in your cupboard, because the answer may be right next to the macaroni and cheese.
