New mothers have so much on their plate it has spilled over onto the tablecloth. Along with feedings, changing diapers and trying to get baby to sleep, she may have to deal with the hair loss that comes as hormone levels in her body shift after delivery. The good news is that postpartum hair loss is a temporary situation, and hair eventually stops the excessive shedding and grows in normally once more. The downside is that this can take months, and most mothers want to disguise their hair loss during this period. Fortunately, there are lots of things they can do.

Shampoos and Conditioners

While your hair is adjusting to the loss of estrogen after pregnancy, you can help it along by using shampoos and conditioners created for fine hair. Use the conditioner just on the tips of your hair, not your entire head.

Avoid Chemicals and Hot Styling

During this time, don’t stress your weakened hair by using chemicals, such as dyes, straighteners or perms, or any sort of hot styling. That includes keeping blow drying to a minimum.

Change Your Haircut

Your stylist can help you find a look that disguises hair loss. A short, blunt cut works well, and it’s also a no-muss, no-fuss style. You have enough to do now that baby’s here without dealing with elaborate hairstyles. Pulling your hair back into a ponytail or wearing a bun is simple, but it’s wise to avoid any sort of hairstyle that creates tension right now. It can make your hair loss more obvious.

Invest in a Quality Hairbrush

After pregnancy, you may find your hair breaking more easily. If you are using a run of the mill hair brush, spend a little more and buy a top of the line product. A good brush helps get the knots out of your hair without your having to pull a great deal. Avoid overbrushing, as that can damage hair when it’s in a vulnerable state.

Eat Right

Your hair requires protein to thrive, so make sure you’re consuming plenty of it in your diet. You may want to consider taking a supplement designed to promote hair growth. If you’re breastfeeding, just make sure any supplements you take are safe for nursing mothers.

Wait a Year

Right now, your postpartum hair loss is causing stress, but by the time your child’s first birthday rolls around, your hair loss should prove a thing of the past.
