Could You Be Causing Your Hair to Fall Out?
by April Maguire
For women, hair loss can be incredibly traumatic. In general, most female hair loss is caused by androgenetic alopecia, which is the same kind of genetic condition that causes men to lose their hair. But even though faulty genes account for a majority of hair loss, bad grooming habits and lifestyle choices are also responsible for a lot of unwanted hair loss. So even if you can't fix your genetics, you can stop engaging in these harmful hair-destroying practices.
Wearing Styles That Are Too Tight
Believe it or not, a lot of hair styling options are incredibly harmful to your hair. For example, putting your hair into a tight ponytail, braiding it, or even using extensions can put excessive tension at the base of hair, damaging the follicles and causing hair loss. So to avoid this problem, wear your hair down every once in a while and allow it to relax.
Applying Too Much Heat
Just like undue tension, exposing your hair to too much heat can cause damage. As such, try to blow-dry your hair on a more moderate setting, keep curling and straightening to a minimum, and also get in the habit of showering in more temperate water. By keeping heat away from your head, you can help to avoid unsightly breakage and thinning.
Crash Dieting
Going on a crash diet may help your waistline, but it's not going to do your hair any favors. In order to stay healthy and strong, your hair needs proper nutrition, so if you're depriving your body of essential vitamins and minerals, then your hair won't get the building blocks it needs to thrive.
Excessive Coloring
Dyeing your hair can provide a nice change of pace, but doing it too frequently can cause big problems. Hair dyes have a tendency to strip the hair of essential oils and weaken the strands. So try to only color your hair in moderation.
Ignoring Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes happen throughout life for a number of different reasons, such as taking contraceptives, getting pregnant, entering menopause or as a side effect of prescription drug use. If you're noticing that your hair is thinning, don't dismiss the possibility that the cause is hormonal. Think about any changes your body may be experiencing and talk to your doctor about ways to reverse your hair loss.
Losing your hair is stressful for anyone, but don't just write it off as the result of advancing age. Look at your daily habits to see if you could be damaging your hair in any way and take steps to correct it. With any luck, once you've stopped the harmful activities, your hair will return to its former glory.
