Could Dry Shampoo Be Killing Your Hair?
by April Maguire

In recent years, dry shampoo has become all the rage. And rightfully so. This nifty little product allows your hair to remain bouncy and oil-free between showers. Moreover, dry shampoo eliminates the need to shampoo and condition every day, which can strip your hair of vital natural oils, leaving it dry and lifeless.
But is dry shampoo too good to be true? Well, dermatologists and hair loss experts have started to weigh in, and surprisingly this miracle hair care product is receiving decidedly mixed reviews. In fact, it turns out that using dry shampoo on a daily basis may be seriously damaging to your scalp and hair.
The Downside of Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo may be simple to use, but it may be too effective to be totally safe. With a layer of dry shampoo on your head, the natural oils from your scalp don't have anywhere to go. This buildup can cause irritation, dryness, blemishes and follicle damage. Also, if the buildup of dry shampoo on your scalp is too severe, your skin may not be able to breathe properly, compounding the problems.
As if all of that isn't bad enough, constant dry shampoo use can also lead to bacterial problems. Dry shampoo can trap bacteria around hair follicles, which can cause inflammation and irritation on your scalp, and in severe cases it can even lead to hair thinning and loss. Moreover, some dry shampoo users have reported they they've developed an allergy to the product. Continuing to use dry shampoo after you've become allergic can cause scarring and result in permanent hair loss.
An Extreme Case
Recently, a picture posted to Facebook of a woman in Belfast made the rounds across social media. In the photograph, Nicole Baxter shows a severe bald patch on her head, reportedly from the use of dry shampoo. And in fact, Baxter's dermatologist backs up her story, claiming that an extreme reaction to dry shampoo led to follicle damage and the subsequent shedding of hair. So does all of this mean that you should unceremoniously throw out all of your dry shampoo this second? Not necessarily. In and of itself, dry shampoo isn't particularly harmful to your hair or scalp. It's only when the product is used incorrectly or excessively that problems arise.
If you want to avoid your own dry shampoo horror story, use dry shampoo the right way. When applying the product, make sure that you're hitting the roots, not the scalp itself. Also, avoid using the product more than twice a week to avoid troublesome buildup. Follow these steps, and dry shampoo can be a powerful part of your hair care arsenal.
