Common Conditions That Lead to Hair Loss
by Jane Meggitt

A woman’s crowning glory has always been her hair, but more women are experiencing hair loss at an early age. What’s causing this premature thinning and balding? Many women are inadvertently bringing it on themselves by poor hair style and health choices. Fortunately, many of these conditions are reversible.
The Right Way to Shampoo and Dry Your Hair
You’ve been shampooing and drying your hair the same way for years, and that simple ritual may be at the root – no pun intended – of hair loss. Learning to care for your locks the right way can keep hair from breaking and thinning. Start by shampooing the scalp via gentle rubbing, and don’t shampoo the rest of your hair. Then apply conditioner from your ears down – while the shampoo is still on the top of your head. Rinse the shampoo off first, then the conditioner.
Avoid using a blow dryer, but if you must, use only the lowest setting. Heat is hair’s enemy. Make sure your hair is completely dry before going to bed, and never sleep in a ponytail. The constant tension just invites hair to fall out.
Use dry shampoo sparingly, if at all. Over time, it leaves minute particles on your scalp, which can lead to itching and contact dermatitis.
No Tight Styling
Tight styles are a primary cause of early hair loss. Whether it is cornrows, extensions, tight ponytails or buns, they can all lead to traction alopecia, or baldness due to the stress on the hair follicle. Unfortunately, hair loss from traction alopecia is permanent, so find another style that makes you look cute.
Vitamins and Minerals
A lack of certain vitamins and minerals contributes to hair thinning and balding. Women deficient in vitamins D may suffer from hair loss. Fatty acid or biotin supplements help hair flourish. Heavy periods may deplete the body of iron, which contributes to hair loss. Women consuming vegetarian or vegan diets may not consume sufficient protein, of which hair is made. Ask your doctor about any supplements you may need to keep your hair and health in good condition. Correcting a vitamin or mineral deficiency should stop hair loss.
In addition to supplements, eat a well-balanced diet. Keep junk and processed foods to a minimum, if at all. Drink plenty of water, but not the de-mineralized versions. The minerals in H2O are necessary for strong, healthy hair.
Birth Control Pills
Some birth control pills lead to hormonal changes causing hair to fall out. If you’ve noticed hair loss after using or switching birth control pills, ask your doctor about changing your prescription. Hair loss may also occur after you stop using birth control pills.
